tonetone's 86 4Runner Build-up Thread

hallo.

im new here, havent done the online forum thing in several years but after searching the internet and checking out a few other sites, i found this one to be the best toyota truck site ive come across.

this is my first toyota truck. ive wanted a first gen tacoma 4wd extended cab for years now but dont really have the cash for the initial investment. ive always liked the 80s/early 90s trucks and 4runners, and when it was time for a project i went to looking specifically for a 4 runner and came across this 86. i got it for 1200 about a month ago. it has minimal rust, slight front passenger side damage from a blowout, and a pretty bad rod knock.

the interior was trash, so ive gutted it completely. i plan to run around most of the time during the warmer months(10 of 12 here in miserable swampy florida) with the top off. i plan to reupholster the seats with some sort of weather proof vinyl and spray truck bedliner throughout the rest of the interior.

the paint is kinda crappy also, looks like a quick maaco respray in some bargain basement maroon. i hate the color. i plan to do some sort of 80s truck stripping(there is a pic of a blue, white, yellow and orange triple stripe design that i came across on here that really caught my eye).

as of now besides the interior being gutted, i also have the top removed, hood and grille off, and everything disconnected from the body to chassis, because i plan to separate the body from chassis. i will be painting the frame, and undercoating the bottom of the cab.

once the body is off, i will go through the 22re and hopefully find it is rebuildable. if not, im considering some sort of diesel swap.

no plans for upgrading the suspension yet, i want to get the body and engine where i want it first.

22re ended up not being rebuild able, search and found a short block from mabbco for about 750 bucks. got it assembled and now running for about a week at this point.

transmission doesnt have 1st sometimes, was wanting to do a manual swap anyway, so im now looking into gathering pieces to make it all work. if anyone knows a decent source, message me. i tried to post in the WTB section but it wont let me, i suppose because i do not have enough posts.

will get some more pics up soon

Welcome to Yotatech. Just found this build. Looks like a solid truck to start with. You need a few more post to place a want ad. Helps prevent so issues with the site. Looking forward to your build.
