You are making some quick work on your truck. Those map pockets come in handy.

I love those pockets...I've already got them stuffed with goodies :-)

Thanks Blue Pile! I really need to get the thing painted! Also AC is on the list. If anyone is in the Kansas City area that had a manifold gauge set and wants some free food and a cold drink...let me know!

My rear window was a little slow so I pulled the regulators and motor. I disassembled everything, degreased it, hit the moving parts with a wire brush, regreased moving parts and replaced the motor with another one I had lying around. Now it operates like butter!

I missed your whirring noise. Did you get it fixed? Just went through something similar with my brothers truck. Wouldnt make any noise on jack stands or empty. Put a load on it and it would start. Wound up deglassing his rear brake hubs.

On your rear window use some silicone on the rubber seals works great on front windows too.

Thanks, cwalstad!

Terry, I never did figure out that whirring sound. Some days it is worse than others...what did you do to your brother's truck?

I have some silicone spray I used but I don't know if it is the same as what you showed in your picture. It evaporates really fast and it doesn't seem like it leaves much of anything when it dries. Does that sound like it is the same stuff you used?

The silicone spray looked wet but wasnt. It has a wax like feel to it but doesnt leave a residue or anything on the glass.

On the de glazing, I took some 400 grit sandpaper and just knocked the glaze off of his rear brake hubs and scuffed his pads a little.

Here are some suggestions I would try and you may have already done some.

Try putting it in 4 Hi and see if anything changes. Might not tell you anything but could give a clue.

Check all of your drivetrain fluids and grease U-joints. If that doesnt work I would then try using WD-40on one ujoint at a time just to see if something changes spraying the outsides, this way if something does change you will know which one it could be. Do a test run after each spray.

May not necessarily be u-joints but then I would pull the front drive shaft and test run, if noise is still there, pull the rear driveshaft and in 4Hi take off easier then you normally would to the speed where you should start hearing the sound.

If the noise is still there, I would start suspecting a bearing. Just curious, have you tried a long hill on a backroad or something and while doing the speed at the noise, tried shutting off enigne in neutral or clutch in?

From what I understand it sounds like a drivetrain noise but just wondering if it could be a engine/tranny/transfer case, noise. Kind of a reason I suggested the 4 wheel drive at the top of this post.

It sounds like what you were using is pretty close to the same thing I used. The window operates so much smoother and it raises and lowers so quickly now.

I will have to try some of your methods. I recently changed all my fluids and greased everything so I can cross that one off my list. The noise does go away if I have the truck in neutral. It is only there when I am in gear and only loud enough to hear if I am accelerating or under load. If I am not really touching the accelerator, the whirring is pretty much unheard. One of my U-joints is new and the other didn't feel like it had play and the driveshaft operates smoothly when it is on stands. I may try the WD 40 trick anyhow.

I should be heading up north to have a buddy help me with my AC in the near future and he said he could help me track it down as well so if I don't figure it out by then, maybe he can.

Thanks for the help!

Sad news...on top of my weird whirring sound that I am still trying to find time to diagnose, my engine developed a knocking noise on the way to work. It only happens in the higher RPMs and it sounds a little higher pitched than rod knock. It sounds like it is coming from the top part of the engine more so than the bottom and it is in the back on the exhaust side. Do you guys think I could have a rocker arm that went crazy on me? Can those things go bad? I'm not going to drive it until I confirm what the problem is.

Your cam could be worn or rocker. I have see some bad ones. At least it is on the top side and not the bottom side. Possibly a warped camshaft.

If that is the case replacing the shaft and rockers isnt nothing to bad to do at all. If a 22r will interchange, I have a junk head but the cam and rockers look good if you need them in a pinch.

Thanks, Terry. I hope it isn't the cam. I actually have a brand new RV Head and 261 cam from ENGBLDR on there that I installed when I first got the truck. The rocker arms are the originals but when I had everything apart, I cleaned out the oil tubes and scrubbed everything down.

I'm hoping to have some time tonight to take off the valve cover and take a look. I will keep you posted as to what I find. I'm really hoping that I don't have to pull the motor again and replace the bottom end. I took a risk and just got a new top end and kept the bottom stock since it wasn't burning oil and didn't have any knock. Hopefully that wasn't a bad choice!

I have done a top end rebuild several times and have gotten away with it. Think you will be okay in that area.

If it is a bad rocker, do I have to replace the head gasket since I have to remove the head bolts to replace the rocker arms?

In a perfect world, it might would be a good idea, but I would be tempted to just do the rockers and keep an eye on it for awhile. You wont be breaking the seal, just be careful about bumping the head or moving it around.

Well I was trying to listen for the tapping noise last night and I wasn't hearing it as strongly as I thought I would through me stethescope so I started to wonder. I was told that perhaps the back EGR plate was leaking and as I was snooping around back there, I noticed one of my bottom bolts to my header and back itself out and fallen off! Turns out I wasn't experiencing any knocking...just a REALLY bad exhaust leak!

Cheap fixes are the best!
