n2o302's 1990 2dr 4runner Build Thread
So it's been a little over a year and I finally have some time to tackle this project after finally selling my 95 4runner. After practically rebuilding this one from the $400 dollar condition that I bought it in I really am going to miss it but at the same time funds cannot allow me to manage three project vehicles all at one time plus with the way gas was going I had to find a solution. So I really hated to do it but I had to let her go at reasonable profit might I add, I'm gonna miss her

but at the same time let me introduce you to my new project a 1990 2dr 4runner 5spd, trailmaster lift, w/378,XXX miles /. I picked her up with the intention of actually salvaging the suspension lift because the motor spun rod bearing, but after driving it in it's current state I never realized how quicker it was as opposed to my auto and the fun factor was definite increase.

What do I plan to do with her well for starters here's a run down of whats wrong.
This isn't going to be a fast rebuild it will take sometime between working and finishing up degree it will be a challenge but I have manage to work on it bit by bit and as soon as i resize some of these pics I'll get them posted up. For starters the first thing I had to repair was the sunroof because when it rains the front floorboards are literally soaked. So the original owner actually had a donor car he gave me with a working sunroof which that I removed and replaced real quick. I'll post up some pics here in a bit.

- Bottom end knock
- Busted sunroof
- Dusty Interior
- Replace wornout interior parts
- Update the front end with the flush headlights
- Definitely replace the bumper
- Fix anything else that needs to be repaired

So here it goes I know I should have taken pics but was kinda doing this buy myself. I went thru the FSM on how to properly fix the sunroof upon finally researching the problem I figured out why the unit didn't operate even after switching sunroof motors, the actual worm cables that pull the sunroof back and forth were stripped of its threads. Which is what lead me to having to switch out the whole sunroof module from the donor vehicle which was allot easier to do than having to buy just the cables from TRD. While I had it out I decided to get the headliner steamed cleaned cause like a previously mentioned earlier it looked like the previous owner just left the windows open its entire life because this vehicle is literally covered with dust. I'll make sure to do some before and after shots next time I didn't really feel like sharing this build but being that its taking so long I decided what the hell, it'll keep me inspired to finish this project. I also decided while I had it out I might as well dynamat the roof because I actually do plan to put a decent stereo in here as well and having heard previous 4runner owners with big stereo's these vehicle are rattlecans when the bass hits.

As you can see in the pics I didn't realize the sunroof module had actual drain tubes at all 4 corners, I did make sure to blow out any dirt that was built up in them and believe me there was allot that actual revealed why the floorboards where getting soaked because of so much build. Problem solved and now I have a perfectly functioning sunroof I did lube the tracks and the actual worm cables while it was out now which makes a big difference the way it opens in close. Next up is the Field Monitor install from a 3rd gen, I'll post up the install as soon as I get done resizing them. Good night yall!

Field Monitor Install in a 2nd Gen 4runner
So here they are pics of the 3rd gen FieldMonitor in a 2nd gen. I was trolling thru ebay looking for inclinometers when I discovered the fieldmonitor and realized I want it cause it looks cool! It took some modifying to make it work but I got it in there, I wish I would have taken the pics of the assembly but my camera was no where to be found until recently. As for mounting the unit, the actual mounting points are similar from the 3rd gen to 2nd gen its just the headliner design. As for wiring the computer part was pretty straight forward from Rockslides write up until you get to the sunroof switch where the wiring diagrams are totally different. Which led me to ditching the original switch and modifying the 2nd gen switch to work. All the lights work and I even switched out the two little bulbs that light up the back of the unit to LED.

For some reason the filler panel color doesn't look like it matches the headliner but I believe its all due to the flash cause its the closest I can get to the color.

Next up is the roll bar install hope to get those pics up soon! Enjoy!

So it looks like its been awhile so here it goes I decided to spray on some sound deadener on the inner sheet metal since i had the interior panels out because once I put this back together again I sure as hell don't want to do this again. so here is some pics of my progress with some before and after shots.
Before & After

Driver side

Rear qtr panels w/ before and after shots

Now onto the rollbar mockup!

I've just got about an inch more to shorten on both front and rear legs because its pretty close to the roof then I can go ahead and weld the original foot plates back on them, I'll keep you guys updated on that.
Now onto a different part of this build since the I had mentioned previously that I planned to put a decent sound system in this rig, I didn't realize that the rear 5 1/4 speakers had a decent little housing built in them it even comes with a built in tuned port way to go Toyota. Hell after removing the old worn speaker, the box has some kind of either little amp or built in crossover, kinda neat for 1990 model vehicle. I decide to go with a set of Eclipse SC8355 3 way components. It looks like I'm gonna have to modify the housing a little to make these speakers fit. As for the midrange and tweeter component I did source out a roof support bar w/ tweeters from a 94 model that had the six speaker system and the interior panel to go with it. Ill figure out a way to modify that to get those components mounted up there. Anyway here are some pics and I'll try to get this updated a lot quicker because I've got an easier class load this semester and I'm gonna try to make this a grad present to myself.

So time for some updates been awhile so here it goes finally stripped out the carpet sent it to the details guys to have it professionally cleaned at the same time finally started laying down some dynamat to the whole flooring area. It was about 8 hours worth of work between 2 afternoons but hopefully it should quiet down the interior. Next up is to finish setting the rollbar painting it and then re installing the interior. I picked up some 18x10 wheels on trade I'll post up some pics after I get it cleaned up. Enjoy the pictures.

A little update laid down some jute padding and finished up the rear box that I modified to fit the new 5.25 speakers and finally started reinstalling the interior.

Removed and resealed the pop out windows!

Replacement speakers.
You can kinda see the plastic I removed with a grinder to get these speakers to fit along with height they actually sit in the boxes lower than the actual speakers.

Finishing up the dynamat on the panels which I previously covered with lizard skin.
Finally with the interior coming back together.

Rear quarters covered with dynamat and the reinstall of the rear panels and shot of those larger speakers clearing the interior panels.

Almost there I can see a light at the end of the tunnel. Enjoy!

Here's better shot of the rear speakers didn't realize it was fuzzy and you can see in the shot that I did have to grind some metal from the support bar for it to clear also included the speaker trim ring into install because I was worried that the speaker cone would make contact with the plastic panels but like I said it cleared it just fine.

Got the rear upper panels installed and the front seats.

Replaced most of the lights with LED lighting.

Front seats look like crap but I did get all the interior professionally steam cleaned before I installed them I might either get them reupholstered or probably throw in some aftermarket ones. Don't know yet but just got to finish out the rear interior with mounting the rear upper deck speakers which I salvaged the brackets and panel cover from a 95 with a 6 speaker sound system then on to the motor swap.
Here's shot of the dome midrange semi-mounted up I test fitted the panel to make sure it fits and the size of the midrange just barely touches up against the grill just gotta finish mounting up the tweeters and that should finish up the interior.
Here's a sneak peek on some 18x10's that a picked up needs tires but I couldn't pass up the price.

Just finished color matching some interior pieces and the rear panel along with mounting and color matching the tweeters for that factory look I though about spraying the speaker grille area black to offset it along with the black tweeters but I think color matching it just gave it a more factory appearance. Ill get some better pics tomorrow when the batteries in my camera get charged.

No sir that brodozer ain't mine I wouldn't get caught dead with a setup like that. Some kid owned that truck, if I owned it I sure as hell would have the 4" exhaust routed down the way they were intended to be, that there is just plain dumb and the sad thing to say is they have them running around alot here in TX.

To be honest with you I already have been working on a set of ported heads and intake for this 90 along with a set of cams and long tubes which is as far as I will take it, as for doing a swap the next swap I most likely will do is some ls based motor for it. Seen them done several times especially in FJ80's and I think it makes just the perfect amount of power this vehicle plus I can literally pick them up engine and computer for around $500 around this area.

It worked out pretty good but I noticed you can purchase automotive undercoat with sound dampening for a cheaper price, my brother's bodyshop guy pointed it out. and sprayed a sample for me which has the same feel and texture, more than anything the dynamat really did cut out allot of interior sound, just gotta finish the doors next.
