malteserunner's 1987 4Runner Build-Up Thread
#43
We're off to Pismo for the weekend. Been putting a lot of work in on our prototypes, I will post up some pics of our new front bumper on Monday. It's a bolt on tube bumper for a 3rd gen 4Runner....I'd like to get some feedback from all of you, to see if we are on the right track.

We are working on the rear bumpers for both my 4Runner and the 3rd gen. The brackets and receiver are in, just waiting for the bender to show up so we can finish 'em up. I think they are going to look and work great. I picked up a Hypertherm plasma cutter the other day, so the fab stuff is going A LOT easier now. Our goal is to be opening up the website and offering our first production bumpers by July. I'll post some better pics of the 3rd gen bumper soon, probably in a new thread.

We have been making good progress these past couple weeks. We have the front and rear bumpers done on the 99 4Runner, and my bumpers are nearly finished. Just need to add caps to the tubes on my front, and the side hoops on the rear.
Since the last post, I added rear three point seat belts for the kids, ordered a WabFab bikini top, cut off and repositioned the sliders, and today painted the runner OD Green.
Here are some pics...

Yeah, except I haven't installed the side hoops yet. The production version will have different gussets above the D-Ring mounts too. Something a little nicer looking. What do you think?

I think it looks really nice, but you could double-tube it to match the front and add a little vertical-drop protection on the corners. The side hoops could well just balance out the look and solve the problem
Oh! and I just noticed there aren't any end caps welded on to those tubes (on your front bumper). I assume that's just because its your one-off prototype and you haven't gotten around to it, bit it'd be a shame to get too much water in that purdy bumper you made...

personally...one of the things that attracted me to that rear bumper was the lack of the side hoops. But i do agree that a second tube stacked to match the front would be nice. I know why people like the hoops protecting their quaters but i like the sleek design over the hoops. Just a thought.

Yeah, we've been so busy working on the tube bumpers and sliders for the 3rd gen 4Runner that I haven't capped off the front tubes on mine yet. Lame I know. I am hoping the side hoop design on the rear bumper will flow well with the front design. They will be kind of low profile. We'll see how it turns out.

More pics of the rear. We are building another one today with the double tube look to match the front. I'll post pics of it later...

This was my original idea. I'm not sure I like the way it turned out though..

I realize this is designed for a 1st gen, but I assume that your 2nd gen rear bumpers would be of a similar style. If you double the tubes or end up putting hoops on, I suggest that you stop yourself in your engineering process NOW and make sure that you can fit your bumper with the 90-91 swing out tire carrier. There are tons of people that love marlin or trail gear rear bumpers can't fit them without modification if they have the carrier. Just a thought.

well done on that bumper! I like it! If you were to make all of the units similarly sized to fit around the 90-91 tire carrier, more than just an option, it lets you have a cohesive look between all of your bumper styles. Marlins wouldnt look like marlins if they were chopped on one side to fit the carrier, they look like chopped marlins!

On another note....I got my WabFab bikini top today
. I'll post pics when I get it installed.
