Dunkin's 1990 4Runner 2DR- 1UZFE/5 MT Swap-Build-Up Thread

Hey guys.

I just bought my first Yota three weeks ago. I found a 1990 2nd Gen 4Runner 2 door on Craigslist with a blown head gasket for $1100.00, and towed it to my buddy Mike's the next day.

She is filthy, but a good starting point. Minimal rust and repairable body damage.

We tore the head off, and started soaking the bores with ATF to clean the schmeg off of them. This truck hasn't been licensed since 2005, and there was alot of water sitting in the #4 bore.

Then I removed the super high tech purple tint. I hate the smell of that stuff when you peel it off of the glass.

I promptly had the head resurfaced and cleaned.

Bores, pistons and deck all cleaned up, new head gasket on

Head is assembled and ready to install

Head back on..

Timing chain is on, with metal backed guides!

Almost fully assembled.

I think I'll be going down there tonight to finish the assembly and install the engine. I wanna drive it this weekend!

I plan to yank the 22-RE out in spring in favor of a 1UZFE. The tax return will help to gather all of the parts.

Ryan

Got her running today. We tried to fire it up last night, but there was no fuel pressure.

We checked all the connections, relays and fuses. Bypassed the circuit opening relay, still no fuel.

So I pulled the tank down and the fuel pump out and found this.

Got a new fuel pump in it and she fired right up! I even got it around the block once, before the alternator started charging at 16.75 volts.

SO, next week the new alternator and exhaust will go on. So far it on a cut downpipe since someone cut the cat out of it.

I've got a buddy selling me a 2" spring, BJ spacer kit for cheap, then get some 32 11.50s on it with wheels like yours, but without the red accent.

I hope to get all the parts together in spring and pick up an ls400 for a 1UZ swap with a 23 spline 5 speed tranny swap. Unless I find a smoking deal on a 3UZ! Its an auto now.

And finally paint it flat black with rhino lined rockers and fender flares (gotta get those too) Also, I like the look of the 92+ headlights and grille, the stuff that is there now is all beat up anyway.

Got a new alternator in today, along with a valve adjustment. Also traced down and repaired the power mirrors, windows, lock and sunroof. Everything works now, aside from the tailgate since the motor is still missing.

not the best way to tow a auto unless you pulled the drive shaft

Don't know anything about the process/cost/difficulty of it but Doesn't sound like a bad idea. I know I regret getting my 3.0 4Runner. I should have done more research and really got on the throttle during my test drive of it. I was so worried about listening to how it ran, sounded, handled etc. I didn't notice that it was slow as hell, lol.

I haven't read up much on the 22rte's, but I do plan to stuff a 1UZFE in this in the spring time.

Is your truck an auto? If it's a manual, you can get a 7MGE or even a 2JZGE in there pretty easy. A dude in Canadia make the mounts, relocate to pusher fans, and just a few wires. Good economy and lots more powah!

Very nice find. Thats got a clean 22re in it. Except an auto. Oh man, that would be the first thing to get swapped if that was my 4runner. 5speed would be night and day with that thing.

I'll be swapping to an R151 23 spline 5 speed when the 4.0L goes in. I cant stand the auto's.

On a side note, I went down to Nix 99 today and bought 1995 4Runner composite headlights, grille, corner markers, front and rear chrome bumpers and a tailgate window motor!

She's coming together nicely.

Picked up the new front end from Nix 99 today.

Before shot.

And after,

I put the other corner light in after I found a working bulb.

Got a rear bumper and a rear window motor too. Now everything is functional, even the rear wiper!

The runner is getting exhaust today, since someone stole the cat before I got it.

But, I got to take it down the freeway for the first time! Seems to do pretty good, although it's a gutless pig. Man, I can't wait till spring to get that V8 in there.

Picked up a bunch of parts today. Scored a 95' SC400 engine, trans, ecu... etc for $1000.00 off Craigslist. 100k miles and it looks as though the tranny has been gone through.
