95 Toyota 3rd member help
I dont think I posted this in the correct section so If i didnt please just let me know. My 95 4runner 3.0 V6 3rd member went out last night. I have never seen a pinion gear wear all the teeth down smooth but for some reason this one has. I have been going through the truck and slowly undoing all the headaches the owner before has done to it.
Here is the question, I assume mine is a 4.10 because of the 5 speed but I will verify later this evening. Am I better off rebuilding this member, finding one from a local pull-a-part or ordering off line. Budget is to try and stay under 700. Now with that being said, is there a possibility that a Tacoma with the e-locker would bolt right in place. I imagine the 3rd member would but I dont know the axle diamter or spline count right now. Just let me know if you have been down this road before and what worked best for you please. Thank you for any help you send my way.

Yes, the taco e locker 3rd will fit, but will need some modification to the axle housing. SEARCH this has been done A LOT!
Check your door code to verify what the gear ratio is, DONT ASSUME, there were a few different combos that went into these trucks.
FWIW, going rate for a used v6 410 diff is under $100. Also, a 4cyl diff will work, but is slightly weaker.
Find out your gear combo, then go from there.

And no, this isnt the correct sub-forum, but youre close!

My third member in my 97 Tacoma went out a few times. your gear ratio is your ring gear teeth divided by your pinion gear teeth. if you cant count the teeth because they're gone it is also stamped onto the housing. your best bet is to clean out the inside of your housing and check its condition. if its not all torn up then you can go online a get 4.10 gears and a master install kit for around $450 from trailgear. are you planning on installing it yourself? if so i will give you a step by step process on how to.

Thanks for the help, definetly not going to assume on the gear ratio but just starting this from work and I really dont have all my information from the truck. If i could find a 3rd with the e-locker to me it seems almost like winning the lottery. I did see alot of people have installed the 3rd with an elocker but believe it or not I have only come across a few articles in build threads, I just havent had time to sit down and read it all.
If the price seems fair, then I dont feel I have an issue with replacing the gears. I have never done a rear end so to speak but I have put this truck back together almost bolt by bolt it seems. Any info on rebuilding the 3rd member would be awesome. If I dont use it, there will always be somebody behind me one day needing the same info.

putting a locker in at this point would help you with only having to tear into it once. you need to make sure if you have shims or a crush sleeve before you order a master install kit. the crush sleeve is a pain in the arse because if you tighten it to much you have to get a new one, and your pinion wont match right. either way you will need a bearing press, some marker pain ( it will often come with the master install kit) and a backlash tool. you can start by removing your old ring gear off of the carrier, then the pinion out of the housing. make sure you remember how the pieces go back together. the master install should have everything that you need besides the housing.
