yarg.

thanks Troy.

hubs are questionable, since we've only put like 7,000 miles on this in the almost 4 years he's had it. the other 248k were someone else's.

I remembered you did a write-up....it's saved for me.

what do you mean by...... "there shouldnt be ANY play in it. in fact, if you remove it there should be a little resistance when you move it. if it just flops around its not necessarily bad, but probably needs grease. if it takes anything more than human strength to get it to move it should probably be replaced"

remove what?

Grease your spindle bushings.

I just bought this fancy tool from Sleeoffroad that does this job. Once I grease mine up, it will just be sitting here for who knows how long. Let me know if you want to borrow it...?

thanks man. saw that post before i went to work. saw a link for SLEE with the instructions. looks like something totally do-able. thanks for the offer. I will keep that in mind.

for those of you playing at home, here is the thread and then the link is in a few of the posts. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...nt-end-263679/

I dont know if the vibrations you are talking about. The front shaft has plenty of U joints in it, wouldnt think there should be much play in it. Changing CV shafts is a pain in the rear for me. I hear you can somehow pull them without seperating the ball joints, but I never could get them apart with out doing it.

Been glancing at threads and little by little trying to get caught up to where you are at. If you are going to get into your hubs, you need a large socket to get the locknuts off. I looked all over the place and finally found one but itis a 3/4 inch drive. After getting it, I found that Wabbit sells a 3/8th drive socket for alot less then what I paid for mine. I am eventually going to get one from him. Would suggest getting it from him before getting into the hub rebuild if you are going further then the actual hub. I just pull the hubs and give mine a good cleaning and lube them up real good.

Getting those cone washers off can be a bear. Start soaking them in PB Blaster now. I roll the nuts up to the end of the studs and just start tapping on them. I use a socket to that straddles the nut. Some I guess hit it with a lot of force, I am not that brave. Just takes patience. Once one breaks free, the rest will eventually start.

thanks. I'm fairly certain Brandon (XXXTREME22R) has one of those large sockets. i know he is doing his bearings right now.

been doing a lot of reading.

i'm kinda boring like that any more. not very impulsive like I used to be.

cone washers: take the acorn not off, heat stud/cone washer with torch (until grease starts smoking) then hit the stud with a brass punch and hammer. worked nicely for me. they didn't pop off, but they became loose after a few hits

but you probably already knew that

I've heard people talk about how terrible cone washers can be. I've removed my hubs twice, and both times it was just plain fun! I heated the cone washers with a torch and they started jumping off the studs like Mexican jumping beans! The few that needed extra persuasion popped off with a few taps on the stud. I don't understand where all the frustration comes from.

hey jerry,

the front driveshaft on joes truck is not a u-joint. its a CV joint. that would be my first place to check. there shouldnt be ANY play in it. in fact, if you remove it there should be a little resistance when you move it. if it just flops around its not necessarily bad, but probably needs grease. if it takes anything more than human strength to get it to move it should probably be replaced. take it to a driveshaft shop. Toyota Ujoints/CV joints are notorious for being a PITA due to their design.

as for the hubs, while they can take abuse, they do need to be cleaned periodically. its a simple job and costs all of $15. if youve never done it and dont know the last time it was performed, id do it anyways for peace of mind. most of the time they get some dirt or water leak past the old dried up seals and it washes out the grease. no bueno. theres a link in my sig for the write up i did.

im definately leaning towards front driveshaft tho.

did joes truck come with manual hubs from the factory or does it have the ADD option? (check to see if theres a vaccuum line coming out the front dif.)

Cheers!

Maybe you can tell me what paperwork I need to move around to get her moved up the list.lol just kidding, they should be getting to her soon. They like to keep the hospitals cold.brrr

Having those links is so nice to have as a reference and a heads up as to what you are going to get into.
