88' DLX single cab , 22r to 22re conversion/SAS/LIFT/Instructional - LONG PROJECT
Hello to all,
I am new to yota tech, not new to toyota's this thread will be updated as I go , I cannot promise that will be every day or every week. I have done all of the swaps listed in the title of this thread countless times. I will point out some things that tend to cause trouble and show you how I handle them. I have seen many questions about converting a 22r into a 22re , and countless IFS to S/A questions, I will answer as much as i can in this thread. I may not have the best of guidance , please do not flame me. I am open to constructive criticism. This is going to be a very long and somewhat spread out thread, as i have most of the parts i will need, and some i do not. Some of my pictures and references may not help you or may not explain this project well enough, though i am sorry for that.
Here is a picture of the starting vehicle: 1988 dlx 22re 4x4 pickup , blown head gasket. As well as the donor truck 86' 4x4 pickup 22r .
Sorry for the messy area, i am doing the first part of this build at my grandfathers house. I will transport the truck to my house after the engine swap , due to the frame being broken on the donor truck . Picked it up for 450$ from the original owner, 163,XXX miles . minimal bed rust . decent interior , with rebuilt transmission. motor is locked up due to water sitting in the bottom end to long from blown head gasket
Both motors are out, i have put the new oil pan gasket on , waiting for clutch kit to come in , and a couple of various items. This motor has recent timing chain / head gasket . I have also swapped over the valve cover from the 22re to the 22r , You will need this as there are extra threaded holes in the valve covers, for attachments including vaccum lines .
I will assemble the motor , well most of it outside of the chassis , so i can give somewhat of a good vocational reference. There are some things in this conversion that can be very tricky , and hard to understand . I am not a professional and nor do i claim to be . More pics to come tomrrow .

Welcome to YotaTech, you have a nice looking truck to start out with, sounds like you have a good plan for the project in the works, and a well rounded mechanical background and experience for us to draw from, look forward to seeing your progress! Oh, and no worries about getting flamed on this forum, you might get a difference of opinion, or constructive critisim, but everyone is civil about it, lol.

Welcome to Yotatech. I just got done converting a 22r to 22re and tried to make a thread to help others. Sounds like you have it down as well. If you post some pictures or add any info I might add it to the thread I created to help others. It is something there really isn't any good information on. Both trucks are great looking. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Well i can honestly say that yesterday was a total joy, i spent 4 hours trying to remove the pilot bearing . Never had so much trouble in my entire life with one. Considering I put that one in that motor 2 years ago when i had the motor apart . Anyways after that stressful 4 hours i made some good head way on the project with the help of my dad. I got the motor set in , and alot of the stuff on the bottom of the motor bolted on.
Some great advice that i can give to anyone with any vehicle is that , if you have your motor out, replace everything that you possibly can, if you do not you will eventually be in the same position you are at this current moment . I had the motor out and the clutch looked great and i just put a rear main in this motor 2 years ago " the donor motor has been sitting for over a year " I replaced both anyways . I have it out and its easy to do why not.
This swap is a pretty much switch this and switch that, on to the new motor, is pretty self explanatory for the hardware part of the motor, autozone as well as LCEngineering , CHILTON all offer diagrams for egr, vacuum , and electrical routing . that i will not get into, i will just state some key points that you should consider while doing this conversion. its pretty simple.
This is the mystery bolt everyone speaks of in the 22r - 22re conversion, because of the motors im using to swap this bolt will be used for me . I removed it properly with a 3/8s drive 6mm hex driver. be sure not to strip this out. toyota only bolt, it is acquirable but from toyota mfg only, or a junk yard. it is directly under the thermostat housing u have to go in between the fuel rail you also have to take off the top part of the intake in order to see it .

The motor is in , and there is one thing I want to stress to anyone working on a 22re, DO NOT EVER REPAIR THE WIRING HARNESS HALF ASS, you will end up repairing it again, or when someone else decides to fix it . they will have they're hands full. I have a butchered wiring harness, anyone who has gone through one knows the hassle and patience it requires.

Theres no much to reference from what i have done so far, besides lots of labor . i plan to try and get an hour or 2 each day to try and get this wiring harness sorted out. I have a couple wires i need to solder. If you have any questions . I can answer within my knowledge . I will have some more pics within the next week , as i go back on shift tomorrow 4-12 . The best parts with the conversion/swap are still to come, so stay tuned!
