I bought the transmission and transfer case over the phone for $175. Im happy with that. Now i have a roadtrip ahead of me to pick it up. About 2or3 hrs away.
Soooo. Truck $250, tranny $175, total build cost so far...$425.

Great score on the tranny. You would be suprised at what you can do with the black trim and some trim paint. On your blinker lense give them a good cleaning and and shot of some rattle can clear coat.

So KyleB hooked me up with this tranmission and transfer case. Im not sure what year it came out of or if it was even a truck or runner. It has a electronic speed sensor and newer connectors on the wiring harness so im assuming mid 90s. I believe its a "w" tranny, i took the inspection cover off the transfer case and there is rust inside it. So inspected the tranny and it looks ok. So im taking the transfer case off the "g" tranny and putting it behind the "w" tranny. Im also inspecting the clutch even though the guy says he just replaced it, he may have put the disc in backwards.

So today im attempting to mate up the transfercase off the broken g54 to the w56. Have to throw in a couple logs and get the garage up to atleast 40degrees before workin out there, suppost to snow again today. By the way the ol lady says the snow weve gotten this year has been no match for the 97 limited with the new cooper cts shoes.

Well i went ahead and attempted to configure this trans and transfer case and was shot down due to the shift shafts on the g54 transfer case are longer than the w56s as shown in the pics which hit the w56 transmission housing and doesnt allow it it mate up. Ive decided to take a break from this rig and tend to the 4runner for the remainder of the day. I took off the inspection covers also to see if i can switch out the shorter shafts for the longer ones on the g54 trans. I can visually see a roll pin on one shift shaft but not on the other. Anyone know if these will change out?

You have gotten further into a tranmsission then I have. Will be looking forward to some tips. It will still be awhile before I get into mine but it is somehting that I want to learn.

Been working on the runner thread but i slapped some 31s on it and it looks a little better. front springs are shot, ill dig into the transfer case a little further when it warms up.
Terry, whats the worst that can happen, split the case and let the beans spill out!!! haha! These manual trannys and the transfer cases arent too bad compared to a automatic.

Lol... Just get a pile of parts stacked up some where. Not like it is the first time or the last time it will happen. 31s look so much better on these trucks.

Well ive decided this week when it warms up i will attempt to install the four speed into the 85. It is the easiest solution compared to splitting the transfer case and switching the shift shafts due to being different lengths.

Ha ha jeez i must be like a picker or something!! Its easy, all you do is get a six pack, play some hank iii, and cruise around the countryside til you find one with outta date plates and weeds and old crap sitting all around it. I know where 3 trucks are sitting side by side . like a 81-83, and 2 84-89 havent got close enough to see if their straight axles. Ill keep ya posted. Its like a calender picture or something.
Anyways i was going to put in the 4 spd tonight and went to take the shift plate off and found it wont come off unless you take the removable plate in front of the shift plate off which gets me no where cause i have to have a way to reinstall it after i install the tranny. First time ive dealt with a 4spd. It seems easier to work on than the 5spds though. Only reason i was doing this is to gain clearance. Maybe ill support the entire truck up high enough to put it in. If i could just get the shifter removed it would be alot easier. It looks like roll pins or something that hold it in??

That is usually how I find some of my trucks. I just start cruising the the back roads and about half the time I do get lost. No problem, I just always make sure I have a full tank of gas before starting out on such an adventure. I eventually will come out to someplace that I know and get back home. I did find a truck on one such excursion and now I cant remember how to get back to it. It had the grass growing all around it. I has been sitting for quite some time. Just got a good laugh about how you do about the same thing.
