fyrfytrryn's 1985 Pickup Build-Up Thread

hey guys.
I bought an 1985 4x4 truck on 8-17-12. came with procomp leafs, rancho 5000s, 32" BFG AT's but best of all the stock chrome steelies! love those wheels. Anyhow, my intention is to build a mild trail truck as well as a winter daily driver to get me over the moutains to work. not much in the way of mods so far, but ive done
-fluids
-removed 2" body lift
-removed rear overload to attempt to get a softer ride (these procomps are terribly stiff)
-removed rear bumper
-fixed all bad bulbs
-swapped in 199X prelude seats
-used GM light bulb holders to put the blinkers in the markers

My Intentions
-a complete grille
-get it either painted one color, or find stock parts that are the same color.
-front bumper, rear bumper, sliders, skid plates
-another set of 32's or 33's
-rear, then front locker.
-430's in the axles
-lower t-case gears
-hy-steer
-leafs that achieve a plush ride, lower the ride height neer stock (can this be done with hy-steer, or is a lift req?)
-2.0" or 2.5" shocks
-solid rear window instead of the slider
-some sort of aux. lighting system

heres some pics!
right after picking it up, time to eat burritos (notice fender gap)

kelly1450 driving it half way home

first night home. dog is sad his room is occupied by a truck.

blinker markers

interior after a scrub

bench be blown

body lift gone (mind the gap)

new seats picked up

Def a good looking truck. I like the stock with lift look. Is the engine compartment as clean as the inside of the truck?

thanks guys! i dont want to go above 33" for reliability issues. i know these axles can take huge tires but i want to keep the impact low. i say that now, but we all know how that goes...
yeah the engine is pretty clean, ill post that up soon.
UPDATE:
2wd grille
domelight/rear view mirror
knock off flowmaster dumped @ axle
"trimmed" the pro comp leafs
looking for shocks that will fit the new lowered ride height, it sits about 2" too high for stock shocks...

Let me preface this by saying i know very little about guns. Pics to come illustrating that, but the story is...
I heard that people use .22 shells to shim the horn contact. Well, I used a shell but it wasn't a shell that had been pre-fired. Installed the shell, hit the horn, heard a slight beep then a POW! The shell fired and bent the crap out of the ring, and shot the spring loaded contact into the column, destroying whatever was in there. Horn still doesnt work.

small update. finally got it out during a massive thunderstorm. planned on doing a route that was familiar but about 3/4 of the route in the gate was locked. wouldnt have been a big deal except the last 2 miles of the trail in was 3" of ice like goo. much of this trail was spent in 4wd hi and full throttle. had to take an alternate route back that was a bit better drained, although unknown and out of the way... as for the updates

-kelly1450 and i swapped rear windows. He wanted the slider so his doggy could poke through, i wanted the solid because ive never liked or used sliders.
-installed kelly1450's old shell that was going to be used for another friends project but he didnt want it. need to make a rear window...
-TrailGear knobs, painted shifter boot plate thing.
-polished the wheels
-picking up fox 2.0's and ford mounts for the front this week.
pics
wheels polished

sloppy trail. notice how far i slid sideways just after stopping

couple of stream crossings later most of the mud came off

couple o knobs

swapping windows

shell on

Great looking truck. Got a laugh out of the 22 shell story. Glad you wasnt hurt. You have a fired shell now. I like the chrome steelies myself. Truck is coming along nicely.

thanks for all the positive comments everyone! ive got a few updates.
-stock bumper, blinkers, and endcaps
-f-250 mounts notched over stock bumps and timmed to fit.
-limit straps.
-fox 2.0's.

shout outs to kelly1450 for the use of his weldifying machinery!

kelly1450 and i valved the front shocks prior to installation. rides wonderfully and according to my measurements is getting right around 8.5"-9" of total travel, most of that being compression.

i know a lot of guys like aftermarket bumpers but ive always wanted a "sleeper" offroad vehicle. my other trucks/SUV's had prerunner bumpers, fiberglass, and other non stock looking modifications. im going to try to keep this looking as stock as possible. plan is to build a simple bolt on front "bumper" that allows the stocker to stay in place. im thinking two simple uprights to a short radius bent tube to hold 2-3 8" lights. i built one for my old 4runner, ill attach a pic. expect the bumper on this 85 to look like it.

next planned mods around sept 21-23
-rear fox 2.0
-sliders
-front and rear bumpers

now, for the PICS!

what i plan on doing to the front bumper of the '85, but better frame attachment and hella 4000's instead of 500's(some of you may recognize my old 4runner)

I Got a set of ford towers I plan on using up front too. Have you flexed out he front yet since install of towers ? I was wondering what kind of clearance you have with tire hitting shock ?

fully flexed and after jumping it a few feet into the air, zero issues.
