pennywize's 1982 Pickup Build-Up Thread

WARNING: LONG POST. I was bored so i decided to type up a list of what i have done and what needs to be done to it still.
1982 pickup long bed.
it had been sitting for about 4 years in someones yard. the owner told me if i wanted it, i could have it for.... FREE!
had a flat tire, the brakes were seized and 5th gear was gone, you could move the shifter to 5th gear but there was nothing there, no big deal, just put in a new tranny.
overall its in very good condition. 157,000 miles. engine runs strong.
i picked it up last fall and havent really done much to it until the past few months. i've done a ton of work and still havent got to drive it out of the parking lot.
it hasnt beed registered in 4 years and i have to smog it. total is gonna be about $400 for past reg and to smog it.
So far i have done the following:
Full tune up- plugs, wires, oil change, fuel filter, cap, rotor, thermostat, all the usual.
replaced all of the rubber fuel hoses.
replaced all the coolant and heater hoses.
replaced most of the vacuum hoses.
install new battery.
install good used radiator.
had some pretty severe oil leaks going on so i replaced...
valve cover gasket.
distributor o-ring
oil pump o ring and front crank\pulley seal.
no more oil leaks... at least from the engine.
i couldnt really drive it cuz the brakes were all seized up, so
i pulled the whole front end apart, repacked the birfs, put new axle seals in, repacked wheel bearings. put on some good used calipers\pads and rotors from my other truck i junked. also put on new brake master.
somewhere along the line i picked up some used 33x13.50-15 wheels to mount on my 15x8 black steelies.
then i realized i could never run 33's offroad with manual steering, so i scored a 85 power steering box, and a PS pump, reservoir and all brackets from an 86then got a new pressure hose and return lines. now i have power steering.
tossed my old rancho springs on the back, with stock shackles. the shackle angle is a little off right now, with the weight of a bed on, it will be perfect.
got some brand new old man emu front springs and bushings, with stock shackles, and rancho adjustable shocks up front (they were free)
with the added lift i needed longer brake lines so i put on the trail gear stainless braided set.
i still had the problem of no 5th gear, so i bought a new clutch and installed it, then threw on a used L52 and marlin shifter seat. and new clutch slave. i might swap in a W56 later.
after a new u joint and some grease i was ready to put the driveline back in, or so i though. had to replace the rear diff pinion seal first.
sometime during all this i got the genius idea to take the bed off and chop the frame, i've always wanted a flatbed. oh yeah, i got a new grill too... no, not that kind, a plastic one for the truck...
so thats about all that has been done to it so far.
LOTS more to do...
need to build a bed.
need to bleed the brakes.
get rear shocks.
repaint the hood black, and paint the roof.
replace the whole exhaust system, from the manifold back.
eventually in the next year maybe, 4.88's and lockers.
i found in a little zippered case under the seat a little glass hippy pipe and some moldy buds, it must have been in there forever!
i know theres something im forgetting, i'll add more later.

oh yeah, no rust on this thing. the frame is SOLID.
the windshield doesnt leak, theres no wet or mold inside and not a sign of rust on the floorboards or cab mounts inside or out.

been a while since i posted here. i didnt do too much to the truck for quite a while but have been back at it recently. just paid the back registration and will get it smogged in a couple days.
heres a few more pics of the progress since i last posted.
the flat bed was made from salvaged steel that a friend gave me. its not the easiest to work with dented rusty and painted steel but it was free so i guess it was worth it.
had to do a whole bunch of other things.
rebuilt the carb.
installed a new blower motor resistor.
installed a center console from a 3rd gen 4runner.
installed ipf h4 conversion headlights with 100 watt high beams
replaced all the dash lights.

the beginning of the flatbed.
the frame of the bed.

welding the bed on
trail gear bumper being test fit. i wont have it fully installed until i weld on the front spring hanger then i can weld the bumper directly to the spring hanger. i did weld a FROR front frame\bumper reinforcement plate to the front of the frame first.

i'll get some more pictures soon of the completed bed and toolbox and of the winch mounted in the bumper.
its been a long process but im finally at a point where i can drive it legally and have some fun with it.
im already acumulating more parts for the next step. ive got sliders, front and rear trail gear 3 inch springs, shock hoops, a front spring hanger and a handful of other parts. i still need to get hi steer and a transfer case double and gears. ive got an elocker and a lock rite already waiting for new gears.
lots of little things to do still. but its coming along ok.

front trail gear bumper with warn m8000 installed.

heres a pic from tonight at the river.
the rear shackle angle is terrible but that will be fixed when i installe my trail gear springs. the bed is ok for now, theres more i need to do to it. i want some small boxes or something hung underneath the front of the bed on each side for chains or straps or extra tools or whatever.

i think thats it for now. its going to be a while before i get gears and hi steer and can finish it but i'll post more as i make progress.
