Hey there first post and my first ever toyota build up. This truck was given to me by a good friend of my fathers. It was his hunting rig was the original owner. This thing had been spent a lot of its life wheeling in Alaska and Wyoming and didn't skip a beat until he parked it in 1990 and there it sat in his shop in east Oakland until I asked if he wanted to sell it. And I uh, was really surprised to say the least when he said " you can have the truck..... BUT, you take everything else I have for it and dig it out yourself. Tickled to death I got it for free and all the other stuff too I came back about a week later and started Digging and boy howdy I thought what did I get myself into. All said and done I have got enough stuff and other goodies to go through this trucks running gear about 4 times and I still have went back yet to get the other bits I couldn't get on the trailer.

Anyways , none of you care about that (you wanna see the build!) here are a couple crappy pictures of how it looks currently. (Yes the front bumper will be going for one that's not 400pounds as well as the god aufuly ugly campershell haha)

One idea though, an auto transmission will be easier to do a swap with because you will not need to cut holes for the shifter or bang out the transmission tunnel, but if you want to do a manual swap, more power to you, and you, my friend, are awesome. I have never owned an auto and have no plans to, I love manuals (I currently have an NV5600 in my Cummins), but an auto will be an easier swap. Just my $0.02

 

I personally have no interest in having a automatic. ( any veihicle with a auto to me is like driving my moms Prius......bleh). I've considered it, but even if I need to weld in a bigger tranny tunnel no biggy. That just gives me the option to flat bottom it.a manual valve body 700r4 would be neat I guess. But that's just a poser slush box. Hah.

Better get started! That's a lot to get done in 6 months. What you need to do is take that red one with the top cut off next to it in the picture and start parting it out to fund your project. I'll start you off by buying the fuel filler neck if it's a short bed...

 

Na use the red one and sell me the other I'll give kawa the fuel neck

Picked the engine up for it yesterday. 1999 ls1, 46k. The guy was really cool and threw in the headers, wiring loom and a ecu and some other stuff(not bad for 500$ huh?). Down side is it needs a couple of rod bearings but that's real easy to fix. I plan on throwing a 224/224 cam in it with roller valve train to push me up to around 400-420hp. Other than that this motor is staying mostly stock.

 

400HP? Gonna make a wheelie bar too??

 

When I was your age, I saw all these builds and it looked so doable and all, I bought cams, wheels, engines etc but it never got done cause it was way too much work for what I was prepared to do and my knowledge. If you make it through and do all you say, you can be really proud of yourself but have a thought out plan and budget or it will be a huge waste of time and money!
