1993 Ford Ranger strange problem!

Well i got a free Ford Ranger, 1993 STX, 4.0L V6. Anyways after having to replace the battery and terminals due to corrosion and now in the shop replacing the starter. Anyways here is the problem and fear.

The truck was used for short trips over the last 2 years mostly. very very few trips more then 30min. anyways i drove the truck home, 45min drive and when i got home i couldn't start it again. starter motor was shot.

Now, there was no sign of the starter dying, it just died.
So am i looking at a deeper problem (Ford badge? just kidding) or will i once in my life get lucky and not have to spend thousands fixing this truck.

BTW: for those following my toyota 3.4 swap, its on hold, maybe for good. took it to a shop to try and find the not firing problem and of course they are not really excited to be working on it saying i need the 3.4 fuze box, etc etc. Im going tomorrow to explain what i have done so far. But due to not having $5k to dump into this project i maybe selling it and sticking with my ranger.

Did you test starter to see if it's actually shot? Could be a bad relay, short somewhere, bad ground. I've had issues recently with what I thought was a starter issue and it turned out to be a corroded ground.
