looking to buy a quad

i'm looking for something on the sporty side, perhaps something along the line of raptors and honda trx450r..... I do mostly northern maine trails (some areas very rough) and every now and then i'll do pits and roads. I'm about 5'6ish 140 lbs, i cant decide on what quad to go for help.

Would the honda trx450r be alright on the trails in maine? I'm worried about the ground clearance, power, torque.

Some people swear by raptors and try to encourage every one to get a raptor. I believe it's just an bandwagon lol. raptors are fun and fast, but ideal for mostly trails?

thanks

PS: i've been out of the whole atv scene for a while. I'm not familiar with which year, model to look out for. Even i wont be aware of common issues to certain atv's because i dont talk to many people who have same interest as i do. So if you could give me few pointers, that would be amazing. Thank you for your input/suggestions.

a 450r definetly not they dont have reverse, a 400ex would be better although its not as fast it sits up higher and has reverse, but you could also try a can am renegade they're sporty and come in 4wd

Who needs reverse? I only go forward . We have a Raptor and 450r. I find my 450r is fine, it's a little wider than the Raptor but the power of a 450r kills the raptor. The raptor feels like a lawnmower, while the 450r is definitely a race bread bike. It has the top end of a 2 stroke and the bottom end of a 4 stroke so it's the best of both worlds.

Ground clearance is about the same on both bikes btw.

if only i could go forward all the time lol, i ride some pretty tight trails and i gotta have reverse, i got a 450r and a 400ex they sit around the same height but i get hung up more on the 450, and your right about the raptor it just feels funny sitting on one

IMO i would not recommend a polaris atv i had a trailblazer and i had so many problems with it, it seemed to be a never ending money pit, maybe it was just my luck though

Raptor or YFZ 450?

Im looking to buy a quad soon. Ive wanted a yfz 450 since they first came out. But after looking at them ive heard mixed feeling cause of some had crank problems. And for about a grand less i can get a raptor (660) with reverse. Any info on the bikes would be awsome. I still have over a month before i purchase one.

Neither, if you've never ridden a quad don't buy anything over 400.
You'll hurt yourself.

I wouldnt buy a USED 450r.
That's a racing class quad, and most used ones have been raced.
Find a used TRX400EX, stock..
Or if you can find a STOCK 450R, then get that.

I live about an hour from the oregon coast so i know ill spend alot of time there. Not really into racing up hills more trails and just beach cruising. Some trail riding also in my area. I also live about 20 minutes from a atv area. Its really sticky red clay mud so i dont know how much winter trail riding ill do but definatly go on trails in the summer. I just want something that will keep me from not getting tired of. I got tired of my 200x 3 wheeler after about a year and i was only maybe 14.

Hey, i do have a lil bit of experience with few quads. I've ridden blasters, wolverines, and most of my family have utility 4x4 wheelers and i dont see the need to have one of those. I ride up north west maine, just above farmingtom. Our trails are pretty groomed, however i will put on a skid plate because there are some spots on the trails, unavoidable! lol

How much should i be really looking to spend for an stock 06, 07 450R models? Even if it has few bolt ons. http://maine.craigslist.org/rvs/2249452413.html Thinking about giving this guy an email. maybe offer 3k? I see an 08 for 4200 and it's stock.

Tyler, i'd would get a raptor for the trails. If it's just straight away and you want it to scream speed, get the yfz lol.

I see Honda trx400's pop up on craigslist for ~$1500 from time to time, and I think that's a LOT of toy for the dollar.

Just because it's 10 years old doesn't mean it's significantly different in terms of functional use or fun.

tyler i love my honda trx450r. it's completely stock and it's pretty fast machine. I just took it out on the trails today. My stock tires are bald from previous owner riding it only on the road. the bike is light and i still went through 2 foot of snow on the trails. it was fun haha

i would get trx400 if you dont have experiences. But hey if you can respect the machine's power, then get the 450r. I didnt get the 400 because i was afraid that i would grow out of it pretty quick. I'm from maine and most of my riding is in the woods, dirt roads, pits.... no sand dunes here lol.

by the way tyler, i wouldnt get the yfz either. My friend had few of them and had nothing but problems. earlier he tried my bike and now he wants one. just thought i'd share. good luck with your search bud!

I know around here, (N.E. Ohio), all the dealerships have new leftover stock. Like,07's & 08's that they are practically giving away..... Just something to check on.... Yamaha is the only one that doesn't have a bunch of leftovers so you will pay top dollar for new.
