Getting in the mood again for a mountain bike
#104
I've heard great things about Eggbeaters but never tried them. Are the cleats compatible with an SPD shoe? If so, those look interesting for a MTB shoe, no chance for mud to pack the works. Hmm, might have to check into them for the new bike.

Thanks guy's.
After posting the above earlier I looked at the Taho reviews, and some said the soles were to soft and even cracked.
http://www.mtbr.com/cat/mtb-apparel-...12_144crx.aspx
No recent reviews on the Sport Mountains, only old reviews.
http://www.mtbr.com/cat/mtb-apparel-...LS_144crx.aspx
I will look at those tomorrow.
I can tell this is going to be an expensive hobby.
While I am there, I may pick up that tuneup stand too I have been eying.
They told me to bring in my bike wrench with me too, and they will show me how to do the pedals in the shop.
I bought this bike wrench around the same time I bought those SPD pedals.
I must have ordered that stuff from Performance, not sure.

Arghhhh
The shop is out of the Sport Mountains in my size.
However...since I spent some coin with them last weekend, he said he will knock down a much more expensive shoe for me called the Specialized
Comp Mountain Shoes.
They are like the Sports, but have a buckle instead of the third strap.
flashkl, does your shop carry these, and have you heard any feedback on them?

Cycling can be expensive, but if you select your ride carefully like you've done, chances are you can sell without much pain.
I just sold my 26 year old road touring bike in two hours for more than I paid. I hated to see it go, but it was time and I've other road bikes to enjoy now, plus the MTB.

Tahoes are fine. Nothing will ever be as adjustable of a fit as a lace up shoe. Not that I'm any sort of expert, but it seems to fall under good reasoning that something criss-crossing your foot 7 times will fit better than any velcro setup that crosses 3 times. I like my Tahoes, and say they're worth every penny.

But theyre not worth very many pennies to begin with...
the comp mountains are just like the sport mountains but they have a stiffer sole (good), better adjustability with the ratchet strap, and they come in half sizes. definitely a better shoe.

No worries, but appreciate the gut-check. Nothing douchey about speaking to your own experiences, so long as room is left for others- which you did. All good. I may just look into those as my next pair of cycling shoes.

OK, I visited the store today, blew some more dough.
1. New work stand with built in scale.
I weighed it earlier, but I forgot what it was.
I think my bike the way it sits weighed in at 29.62 lb.
Beefier tires and bigger than stock, the tool bag on the rear, that adds up a tad, and these Shimano pedals I had put on could weigh more than the factory ones too.
This stand is the same one the shop uses for all of their work on customers bikes.
Bike can rotate 360 degrees, and the vertical pole will go much higher.
This thing is very cool.
Little did I know I would get back into this sport/hobby again, I gave away a perfectly good Park stand a few years back.
Topeak PrepStand Pro (pay no attention to the price on the website, that is an old one.
Stand retails there for $250, I got it for $225, same as Amazon.

2. Shimano PD-M324 MTB Pedals that I bought about five or six years back.
Jeff there said this was a good idea to go with first since I can ride locked it, or flip the pedal over and ride unlocked.

3. Specialized Comp Mountain Shoes 2010 model (black ones)
Saw the 2009 model, the unlatching system is harder.
The newer 2010 model has a simple push button to release the ratchet strap.
Went with an EURO 42 which is a size 9 in USA measurements.
The show was about an inch shorter than my size 9 New Balance shoes, but they felt good, and I had some toe room.
Certainly funny to walk around in them on the showroom floor there.
Jeff the guy that helped me has a pair dating back about four years, and he swears by these.

Thanks.
The stand is certainly different looking than the Park styles I have seen shops use for years.
I do believe Topeak copied another maker though.
Saw a stand just like this online somewhere sans the scale, and with red anodized tubes.

Feedback Pro Elite Bike Repair Stand

There was another brand too, Ultimate Pro or something like that.

Ive always been curious about the ultimate pro stands, but have never used one. My boss has, and he says its nothing special, and that no better than the topeak. And the red one looks ismilar to the topeak, but I think they copied topeak, not the other way around. The topeak looks to be built better and have a better clamp design.
