You must be a young kid because you have no concept of money. The outside effects on your truck would probably bring you a couple hundred dollars. Just because you paid $150 for your lights doesn't mean they are worth that used. Even if you never used them if them are mounted on the truck they are used and no one, unless they are highend lights will pay that. Secondly spend a hunfred bucks and have it detailed in and out professionally that will help. Will it bring you into that $4K-$6K range? Hell no BUT it will help you get more out of the truck. If all you want is more power then look into a 3.4 swap. It's not cheap but I guaruntee you will be very happy with the power. Realistically if you are going to list itr in the paper or Trader YOUR high end should be $4000. That doesn't mean you are going to get that but at least you will get people calling to get more info or to come look ar your truck.

Well it seems from the few that have replied to this that I shouldn't try to
sell it here on yotatech. Maybe someone in my town will want to pay around 6 for it, since they have so much money. If I was to list it, and everyone who came to look at it asked me why I didn't clean it, then I might deside to clean it then. It will prob just get rid of the light dirt on it, but waxing this doesn't seem to help anymore. I was thinking about getting it repainted at like macco, but if i wheeled it out here, it would get scratched up the first time i take it out. Maybe I can paint the wheels black, since they are cheap wheels anyways. Was also thinking about having the seats reupholstered.
The interior would be a good investment, but I don't think the exterior would be.

Well this is a new direction but...
Does anyone have any links to anywhere that has done the 3.4 swap into a 2nd gen or any other engine, in Arizona? And how much after everything was finished? If it cost like $1,000 or around there, then I might be able to do that. Would it be cheaper if you found the engine and just went to someone who did these kind of swaps and gave them the engine? Also, what exactly do you swap out besides the motor? Do you swap out the tranny? I know you'll prob swap most or all the wiring. Anything else on the drivineline that has to be replaced along with it? Or should be to help it run better? I know there's info on here about people doing swaps, but I want to know of any done here in Arizona, and how much.

It's going alot more then $1000. For $1000 you could just put one of those used jap motors in.

so, you have a denter fender, dead paint, messed up interior, all on a 17 year old truck and you think that you will have a chance in hell of getting nearly DOUBLE the KBB for it?
ouch. you need a reality check - seriously. i know you may WANT to get $6k, but w/ all that above, it just isn't going to happen. a swap will be $600-$800 just for the engine, then another couple grand in shop charges if you have someone else install it for you. you might get $400 or so for your 3.0. sounds like that isn't a good option for ya. another way to go is a GM 4.3L, but then you have almost the same cost to do the same thing.
first and foremost, before you waste your money on an autotrader listing, see if you can get the paint looking decent. you'll need a $30 wal-mart buffer, about 3-5 bottles of "scratch out" and some buffer pads. from there, apply a good wax to seal your work to get the paint back to decent condition. ditch the shag. get some decent floor mats and cover the junk that's wrong w/ the carpet. get a replacement center console section from the junk yard or online and get the interior back up to par. ditch the wimpy lights on front, and do something w/ that red emblem and valence - black would look so much better by the way. you should also consider some new treads and possibly some wheels from a 3rd gen to bring the look up to date. i personally don't care for those wheels at all and think they REALLY make the runner look pitiful.
from there, you'll then have a decently clean start. if you still want to sell it, then start w/ KBB Retail for your zip code and work your way DOWN in price from there. however, after cleaning it up and considering your options, you may want to hang onto it and save up your money (about $2500 minimum) to do a 3.4L swap. a better option than that is a supra engine swap. however, stay away from the turbo I-6. you don't need that as an inexperienced driver and you also don't need the headache or expense of getting the turbo set up properly in your rig.
last of all, good luck in whatever you decide to do!

I don't hink you can directy compare your rig to those two. Maybe close. In the end it does not really matter what the owner's asking price is for wither of those vehcles. From the pictures, both of those trucks look to be in better shape. Also, they are four years newer. As has been suggested numerous times, go to www.kbb.com that's kelly blue book. You can type in your zip code your vehicle information and mileage and it will give you your trucks estimated value. The private party value is what your are looking at and from the looks of it, and with the repairs you have mentioned I would list your rig as "fair" condition. I did that and that is where I got the figure of 2700 dollars.
You show your location as fountain hills. Yes people there have a decent amount of money. They did not get all that money by paying double for everything they bought. All you have to do is put yourself in someone else's shoes. The kbb is 2700 on your truck. When you ask for 5-6 grand you are doubling the price. What would you think of a buyer who did the same thing to you and offered you 1350 for your rig? You'd probably think they were ridiculous.
Maybe you want to swap your engine. Maybe you want to sell the whole rig. Whatever you do, decide what you want to do before you offer to sell. If you do end up wanting to sell, and you ask close to kbb, you'll get offers, maybe one from me.

An engine swap cost bucks -- usually between $3,000 - $5,000 depending on how much of the work you are able to do on your own. You're not even in the right ballpark.
I'd recommend you hang on to the 2nd gen 4Runner and don't put any money into mods. Save for a year or so and then sell the Runner, toss in your savings, and go buy a 3rd gen 4Runner.

I like the idea of a swap now more than selling my car, never put too much thought into it. I like how the 2nd Gen looks, I think it looks better than 1st,3rd, or 4th. By the way, I have looked at the value of it on KBB. When I did it, I did the "good" and the "fair" setting, and got back like $2900 for fair, and about $3400 for good. I also put in if the paint was flawless, and then I changed it to only 1K miles, and it came up with the fair value, but that was like $4400. So apparently these things aren't worth that much no matter what you have on it or put on it. Someone needs to make a site that can do a price quote by location, what aftermarket stuff you have on it, paint job,(which if you had a custom paint job, kbb isn't going to know that, so you could spend like 4grand on a paint job, and kbb wouldn't raise the value at all), and mechanical parts condition.
I looked up a 96 w/ v6,4wd,5spd,208K and i did the 16 question quiz, and it turned up fair, just like mine. marked all the same options, except the 96 has dual airbags. The "fair" price was $5400. If I saw a 3rd Gen 4Runner for sale for that much, and ran the same as mine, and all the same options, I would sell everything I can to get it because it is such a good deal. The difference is the V6 eng and dual airbags. Now, the only time I have ever seen a 3rd Gen 4Runner for sale within the $5-$6K mark were 4cyl's, tranny probs, eng probs, extremly high mileage 300K+, rolled, crash, or more than one of these. So I'd think they would be worth more, and according to the market(NOT KBB!) they are worth more.
Anyways I think I'm gonna stop posting in this thread, because I know everyone is getting tired of seeing the "idiot who thinks he can get $6K for his rig". That's just what I would list it at, and lower after awhile, and keep lowering until I either sold it, or went too low and decided not to. So now that I made myself sound like I don't know anything(about money or how much my car is worth according to you guys) I think I'm done. Unless you still wanted to post about anything leading up to now that I've porsted and would like to talk about.

What your not understanding is just because you have a $4000 paint job or aftermarket parts it doesn't mean it is worth $4k more. If you look are you can buy already built trucks or buggies with several thousand into them selling for $5k or $6k.

So say I have 2 of:
2005 1500 Chevy 4x4 15,000 miles completly stock
2005 1500 Chevy 4x4 15,000 miles, and a 6 inch lift kit with 35inch tires, headers, true dual exhaust, custom interior, $10,000 two tone paint job, K&N, Alpine's best system available and the best speakers too, and limo tint, and topped off with a Supercharger.
Now, which one is worth more? I know this is way over exagerating, but this is my thinking. If you add something to a vechile, that it doesn't need, and makes it better, or look better, then you increase the value.

Your truck isn't a brand new or even a near new vehicle. Yours is 15+ years old. the trucks you described above and yours...or mine for that matter, aren't going to fetch the same price. It's apples and oranges.
You and I both have the same year truck(1990),compare these two. Which would you pay $5K for your or mine. Don't answer that...because your truck is lacking one thing. That is presentation. You can put a dress on a pig but it's still a pig. what you should do is have it professionally detailed inside and out. You with sopy water and a rag and hand towel waxing your paint will not do it. It needs to be buffed. same with the interior. Just vaccuming the inside is NO help. It should be shampooed and every crack and seem cleaned. Same with you engine clean AND new plugs wires and fresh oil and filter. The first thing I did when I bought my truck was checked the oil. if it would have been dirty that truck would be someone elses right now. I'm guessing but I think $250 and your truck would be a lot better off. Spent other $400(?) on tires and you possibly could get $4k for your truck. $650 is alot cheaper then any motor swap and it would be a smarter way to spend your money to get what you really want.
If what you prefer to have is a truck as opposed to a SUV(4runner)look at a tacoma or an eariler year. Use it as a "stepping stone" to eventually get a T-100if that is what you really want. You could easily find a truck for $4K already built like you want.

The interior is going to be cleaned. I don't know if the carpet is even worth cleaning, so I'm trying to find someone who has kits or a clean carpet to do my entire inside. (The shag carpeting is just something I experimented with, and was going to remove when I found a good deal on carpet) The outside was cleaned heavily when I bought it, and it shined real nice. But I tried to do it again like 2 months ago, and it didn't look much better. So the only way to make the outside better is to get it painted. I may either get a macco(which I know can be a bad idea) or someone at work who said they painted their car, so I thought of asking him. The oil is no problem, since it was checked when we bought it, and was clean. Also, I think the place we bought it from sprayed it down, but it was cleaner than any car under the hood I'd ever seen. I get discounts on oil changes too, so again, no problem.
As far as getting a toyota tacoma or a toyota truck of the same body style as mine, definite no on the truck, and the tacoma, it's near impossible to find one with the 3.4 4x4 for less than $6K here. The T100's seemed like a good choice since the have the 3.4, and more room in the back and are a little more rugged personally.

I bought a supercharged 97 4Runner V6 5-speed with 197K meticulously-maintained miles (all records came with it) for $6K. So yes, it can be done.

Some stay on for awhile, but most of the ones that anyone would take one look at and think it looked good, immediately jump on it and put a down payment, so noone else can snatch it. I prob won't end up selling it to someone on here, but here in Phoenix, I bet I can get at $5K for it. When I get more serious about selling it, I'll prob clean it up(prob this weekend). I don't think it'll look much better though, since the paint is already kind of faded. Which may turn some people away.
Here's the story again:
I had been looking for about 4 months in the autotrader for a 4Runner. Every week or so, a new one would come up for sale in the range I could afford. I would call that night, and they would say "Already sold". And it was the first day it was listed. But then mine showed up, and it was at a local small dealership, and they don't sell as quick there, so I called them up the day after it was listed, and no one had claimed it yet. I was so excited, and I called my parents, and my dad called them back. This was all on a Wed., which was the day before Thanksgiving, which was my Birthday also. The guy said they were closing early that day, and we couldn't make it. So he said no one would come by then and buy it, so we waited till friday, and got there as soon as the doors opened. We immediately decided we wanted it, and took it for a test drive(my dad did, since I didn't know how to drive stick yet), and he said were buying this.
Not that you wanted to hear this very very long story, but It was an exciting 3 days, and shows you how fast these thing sell around here. Any 4Runners usually listed for around $6K and higher, usually take about 2-3 weeks to sell here. Now with a story like this, you might think why would I sell it then? Well, it was a good first car, and later in life, when I have a full time job, I'll for sure own at least one(maybe save the vin on this, then later try and track it down). The time has come for me to get something else, with a little more power and same reliability as a Toyota(which means a newer Toyota, since nothing seems to be as reliabile as them).
Now back to the price, I do have some wiggle room, but I just wanted to start it at $6K, to see what I get. I'll prob only do pickup, and I live in the Phoenix area. I would trade for a T100 that has the 3.4L V6 and is 4WD, preferably the Xtracab.

Well, when I get done cleaning the outside and inside, maybe even repaint the outside, I'll post it back up here, but I prob won't want to sell if I keep it and repaint it. I'll be too sad to see someone else get to enjoy it.

1. accroding to http://www.edmunds.com, your 1990 w/ 208k is worth (Private Party Seller - NON DEALER) = $1,027 (Full-Blown Dealer Retail) = $2,148. That's w/ RED, 208k, SR5, V6, 4WD w/ auto hubs, power everything, roof rack, chrome bumpers, and average condition - which yours is in.
Here's the link so you can see for yourself.
for that "2005 Chevy", it would add MAYBE a couple grand AT MOST to the value, but that's ONLY if you had a buyer w/ the cash to put that much above and beyond what the bank would loan him on it. with your truck, you don't have 35's, a $10,000 paint job, or anything else that adds any value whatsoever. you do have dents, dead paint, bad carpet, and missing trim pieces that definitely deduct from the value.
Please, look at all these people telling you that you're going about this the wrong way.
Get a job, save EVERY PENNY you can. do that for a year or so while spending the absolute least amount feasable on your current 4runner. find a decent 96+ runner or tacoma for sale and get your parents to help you get it. when you get it, then sell your runner for a REASONABLE amount to help pay your parents off and if you have anything left over, then you can spend money on your new ride.
DON'T think that you can get more than you paid at a dealer for your runner when you first got it. you WILL NOT make money on a vehilcle that you buy from a dealer - PERIOD. second, don't put several thousand into an engine swap. in the end, it's still a 1990 and you'll eventually want to sell it. an engine swap won't get you any more than a stock 1990 4runner - EVER.

well I said i wouldnt post anymore but I have to answer this real quick.
I don't have the runningboards, they went to the dump, but I do however have the chrome wheel well pieces, I just took off because it looks better. I do plan on saving, already have a job, but not putting money into this is going to be tuff since there's so much I want to do with it, just the power is not there. Anything I do to it, won't necessarily hurt the value, and if I get it repainted, then wax that up real good it might help alot. The only way I could ever afford a tacoma or a 3rd gen 4Runner is prob if I get either 6K for this(which seems like that's never going to happen) or if I get it at a small dealership that will do low monthly payments(like 250 mo or lower) T100's are cheaper for some reason, but it seems they would be worth more since they wern't made for that long, and not very much were sold. During the summer, I'll probaly sell this again, but most likely will have a new paint job, and the interior will be clean. Maybe even a lift and bigger tires. I'll prob list it at 5K then with new paint and new/cleaned interior and lift with bigger tires. If you think it's worth that much after all that, then I'd post it here again.
I don't have the runningboards, they went to the dump, but I do however have the chrome wheel well pieces, I just took off because it looks better.
