I searched, but still a few 285/75/16 vs 265/75/16 Questions

After doing a little research and searching on the boards, it seems that the biggest question is between the two tire sizes. With Christmas coming so are new tires. So, My main question is between the two sizes how much Power loss I am going to experience going to the 285's. I really want the 285's but don't want to feel like I am driving my old second gen 3.slow 4runner again.
Any other thoughts would be great!

I have done the deckplate mod and will be going with either the flowmaster 40 or magnaflow exhaust here shortly. I wish I could do the S/C but school first.

I was debating the same thing for about 3-4 months before buying tires. My decision finally came to: Is the 1/2" of added ground clearance worth it? (loss in gas mileage, loss in power, rubbing issues) I'm very happy with my 265s... I have about 2.5-3" lift and no rubbing issues. I would definitely regear before going to a bigger tire (that's just me tho), and I'm SC'd. When I go up in size... I'll add some body lift.

Thanks for the reply monty- What setup do you have in that picture of the runner? I really like the looks of the tires and the height.
Thanks for the input.

I had 265-75 BFG all terrains and after I lifted my 4runner I upgraded to 285 MT/Rs. Like Ric said, I really can't tell a difference with power. MPG might have gone down a little, but the 285s throw off the odometer a little too, so its probably about the same. My vote is 285s, they will definitely look a lot better!

Not trying to hi-jack the thread but I am looking into getting 285/75/16's but see they are usually more expensive than 33's or 31's, etc due to the metric size or something?

Anyways, I will have 16x 8 wheels on my 4runner and want something that is really close to the 285s or slightly smaller....I am not sure how to convert the tire ratios when dealing with these two different sizes. What is similar to the 285's, (33's?) Any help is appreciated.

I'm really happy with 265/75/16 on 16x8 wheels. I have a 3" lift.

However, my happiness soon fades when I'm up against a truck with 285's or when I see one drive by. Upset is more like it when I see 305's.

I'm not sure how much more power loss you'll have with 285's but I have to think it is substantial. Others above have said it's not much so they know from experience but it doesn't seem right.

285's are a little less than a full 33" tire but rounded up are 33's. I believe it's a 32.8" tire according to 4crawler's website calculator. Here's the link: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/4LoCalc.shtml#MetricTire

Brad, where in Utah are you?

When i went to 285's with my first lift, i didn't really notice any loss of power and mpg, just don't drive it hard and you'll be just fine. When i went up to 35's I put on my exhaust the same day and that really made a difference. So if you're concerned with power loss, and you plan on doing an exhaust upgrade, don't worry about it

I have a 22re and I got some 265/75R16 tires this summer. There was definetly a noticable loss in power, espcially acceleration. Noticable but just bearly. I'm very happy with the tire size I got. Wouldn't want to go any bigger and the width really works well in the snow.

if you go with all terrains, go with the 285's.... My 265 Revo AT's looked wimpy small and I ended up getting 295's which were great... I also added a 2" BL but it was well worth it...

Did notice it took a little more effort to get moving but actual mpg probably didn't suffer much...

I debated this too and decided that 285's were the best choice...there have been responses from "I haven't seen a difference at all" to "barely any difference, worth it for the looks" so I figured...nothing I can't deal with.

As many of you have said I also thought about the 265/75 285/75 issue for about a month. I had a Taco with 285's and 3" lift and had rubbing issues in the rear that made me really stress off camber obstacles. So with the Runner I did the 265/75's and even though they don't look as cool, I have no rubbing issues and am free to stuff the wheels completely. The look really is a lot differant and I may go to 285's when these are toast. I have wanted to stay away from BL's because of all of the negative things that I have heard about them. Although most of you guys are running BL's and seem happy with them. The difference between AT's and MT's is huge also. Localmotion is running 265/75 BFG MT's and they look pretty good in his avatar. Maybe he can post a larger picture to show it off.

I really like the height of the 265s with 2.5"-3" lift... but I do wish they were wider. After I get a 1.5" BL... I'll go up to the 285s. I'll probably stay with the Toyos too. They ride soo nice and are fairly quiet and look cool. I'm getting close to 10k miles on them already (just 4 months old).

I have 265/75 Nittos on Ivan Stewart rims and no lift. I think it looks perfect. No lift planned whatsoever.

Last night I finished my 2 1/2 lift on my 97 4runner only to put some 285 75 16's on to it. Today i went down to a tire shop and tryed to get some 285s but the guy that worked there said, "Even with the 2/ 1/2 lift on there, these 285's wont fit". So now im pissed and wondering what im going to do. I could just get some 275.. but thats what im already running.. but with no tred heh.
