So I bought (4) used 31x10.5 Goodyear Wranglers last weekend in what seemed to be great condition with plenty of tread. Had them mounted today and they look awesome on the truck. Then when I first drove with them on I thought, "wow, these are loud". The more I drove it, I thought, "wow, this can't be normal". They are not just loud, they (or at least one) seem to make a pretty serious whining type noise. Not just a tready sound.

So my question is, what would most likely cause that type of problem? Could it be incorrect pressure, lugs too tight, not properly balanced? Or maybe a problem with the tire itself? I'll check what I can tomorrow anyway (and maybe take the truck back to NTB), but thought I would just go ahead and ask. Also, anyone with these tires that can tell me if theirs are unusually loud on the road?

Are they MT/R's?

 

And just in case they are...yes, they'll whine like that.

 

yup, they are noisy...It seems like mine get louder the older and more used they get! Also, if the vehicle(or yours) that they came off of was out of alignment enough to cause the tires to wear funny, they might quiet down once they "wear in" a bit. My MT/R's are always loud for a few days after a rotation...

actually mine aren't MT/Rs (i wish though!). they are RT/S. sorry, i should have mentioned that in the beginning. does the same still apply??

 

rt/s come stock from the factory on some 4runners. Mine had them, they were pretty quiet. Not as nice as michelin LTX/MS though. There isn't much tread depth on the tire when theyre new, so unless you measured tread depth how could u tell they were relatively new?

also check to see if they're cupped or dry rotted.

 

i really have no way of telling how old they are, i know. but they look to be really good condition. i didnt notice any uneven wear, dry rot, etc...

the strange thing is, when i look at the RT/S on tirerack, mine look nothing like that...

also just had my gf drive the truck while i sat in the passenger side. whine is way louder on the drivers side. from the passenger side everything sounds like what i'd think it should.

Probably quiet down once the "wear in" but could have one that's defective somehow.

 

if you look on the sidewall, you will find the dot number. you will see something like:
DOT ABCD EFGH 1234 or 123

if there are 4 numbers, thats the week and year those tires were made. example 2104. they were made the 21st month of 2004.

if htere are 3 numbers, thats the week and last digit year of 1990's (or 80's if they're that old). example 189. they were made the 18th week of 1999.

I pulled the spare off my old truck. it was like 055. 5th week of 1985. ya it was time to replace it, even thoug it has NEVER been used.

with all this info, you can get a better idea of how old the tires are.
