changing rim width

Hey guys I have a stock 3rd gen (98) 4runner ltd. It sais that the wheels r mounted on a 7" wide rim. (if anyone else can confirm this that would be great).

I was wondering how wide of a rim can I go using the same tires? I would like to just buy new rims for right now (prob. around 16X8.5)

thanks!!

Pull a wheel off and look on the inside surface, the wheel dimensions should be stamped/cast inside:

And for the tire mounting width, check the mfg. web site for that size tire and see what range of rim widths are recommended.

^ What he said, as long as u got a wide enuff tire, it should be fine, although it may wear bearings a bit more...

well as far as bearings go, I shouldnt be too worried with a 3rd gen runner should I?

If I do decide to put spacers on, THEN should I be worried about overloading my bearings? My tires are rated at 7-8"width, so 8.5" with some spacers would be ok?? Thanks a ton.

oh and one more question...backspacing. I am looking at pro comp 97s and the backspace is 2.5 in. these wouldnt stick out too much on my 3rd gen will they
?
