ok, so i posted a thread a couple days ago, and was surprised at how much feed back i got. this is a really good community

in a thread i posted, i talked about getting stuck and having to get pulled by a fork lift, some guy on here said its a good idea to keep a nice little survival pack with u just in case sumthin happens. so ive been putin some stuff together, like tow cables and other usefull crap. so i thought it would be cool 2 start a thread where every one posts what they keep in there truck for those emergency offroadin days.

i hope this isent already a thread. i seached and couldent find anything. so here i it is?

i always keep

* 2 med kits, 1 "advanced" one. and one that came with my yota, keep em in the rear side pannles of the 4th gen 4runners

*this cool little black and decker batter saver. ( saved me many many times) also keep this in those pannels.

*got some tow straps, this should save my ass a crap load

*a mini shovel (always handy)

* a big ass mag light and cell phone charger. incase my phone dies and im stuck.

* and spare tire " duhh " and jack and lots of tools

thats what i got so far. any thing else u guys recommend?
ive been thinking . cause it only takes 1 bad judgment 2 get stuck and be at a spot all night long.. id rather be prepared... and ive learned the hard way to always bring friends with off road vehicles

Axe, shovel, 3 flashlights (one led big @$$ maglight) 6 knives.. small tool kit (socket set metric of course hammer screwdriver phil and flat) my "spare" EMT bag (paramedic bag) come along, 8k chain 15 ft 12k rope 15 ft, 2 snatch blocks, gloves, tree saver, in winter extra blankets if im up north. 2 power inverters, and depending on the trip, 2 jerry cans and a spare battery...

 

I have a axe, hatchet, 2 socket sets and a wide variety of wrenches, and misc tools, ohm-meter, spare lengths of wire, knife, 2 flashlights (one battery, the other you wind) packs of misc sized batteries, tire chains, 3 tow straps, rope, flares, tire patch kit, brake fluid, spare clutch line, spare oil, high-lift and a side compartment is filled with bottled water and non parashable food items, a shovel and 4lb sledge. I am running a optima red-top which I have high faith that it will not die while out on the trail.

 

I bought an SUV storage box from lowes and crammed it full of junk...

I don't have much in it right but I have:

-tow rope (pretty crappy one, upgrading when truck drives again)
-1 4D LED Maglite
-1 mini LED Husky flash light
-1 LED Husky head light? (the kind with spandex straps that goes over your head)
-2 jackets
-ATF fluid
-windshield washer fluid
-plenty of extra wire
-pocket knife (but its ALWAYS on me)
-throwing knife set (mostly for fun but I guess you could find a use for it out in the wild)

And I plan to add:

-2 17,000 lb tow straps
-some sort of chain
-blanket or 2
-machete
-axe
-mini shovel
-glow sticks
-first aid kit
-waterproof matches
-plenty of rope/string
-a tarp
-extra change of warm/cool clothes
-a good tool set
-miscellaneous parts for the 4Runner

This is on my rear door full time.
Stove, fuel, utensils, freeze dried food, lighters, flashlights/batteries, military knife, first aid kits, ect.
Enough grub to survive for about three days with full meals.

I do not have clothes packed into the ones on the doors, I carry extra in a separate REI day pack with a water bladder built into it.

It is a great idea for everyone to carry supplies like this.
We are told to do so even for work in case of a disaster and we have to spend the night(s) there.
We have cafeterias at work, but that food could go quick in a scenario like this.





Besides the bug out kit above, I also carry many tools for an emergency for the rig(s).

Believe me, I tried to take it when on vacation in August, I ran out of room.
It is in the closet in the spare room.

 

I am not seeing any blankets, and many of you live where it is way colder than here. I keep a full socket set, set of wrenches, screw drivers, first aid kit, small tent, water, dried fruits, blanket, and a small tent.

 

I carry a sleeping bag in my DD in the winter. If I get disabled and the car won't run or something, I can wrap up and wait.

 

I also have a few light weight cotton blankets I keep rolled up with bungee cords.
Useful for throwing on the ground too if you need to work underneath the rig.

Dave, good idea on a sleeping bag to keep in the rig.
One thing I do not have in there yet.

 

Food- cheap stuff like Chefboyrdee canned so don't go bad if the can don't get banged up (botulism sucks)

H2O- titate to season(hot equal more and remember to change out supply) but remember you can dehydrate in the cold too.

All my hand tools

Air compressor and hand pump- airing tires and strarting fires

Tea candles- starting fires

axe/shovel

clothing and blankets- titrate to weather and altitude

Dog food- ravoli makes the dog sick and as long as we got the dog we ain't starving

recovery gear is an always have

Basic medical stuff- I won't treat anyone other than family and close friends or any military person (becuase of my job I'm covered for them)

But the most important and the one that if forgot/if never had will void all others- Common sense

Knowledge (take a survival class and read books) practice what you learn ie starting a fire in perfect weather is no problem, but what about in the rain? or deep snow?

in addition to what most others have already mentioned, i also carry an electrical repair kit, fuel line, spare clothes, large bright orange sheet or blanket(for signalling aircraft or making shelter), book with color photos of edible plants, small survival manual, US army first aid manual, snake-bite kit, and if i'm going really far for a long time i carry my gun and ammunition.

some of u guys go all out with survival gear..thats god tho.

i live in southern California( ORANGE COUNTY ) SO IM ONLY GONA GO 2 LIKE HOLLY JIMS AND TRABUCO CANYON TRAILS, ITS KIND OF FAR FROM HELP, BUT NOT THAT BAD, so my kits alot smaller than ures, but im makin it bigger thanks 2 you guys, Im SURE U guys r goin on trails all the way in the middle of knoware with no help for miles doin like huge expeditions and thats why u guys have so much equipment. some of the stuff im seein could last u weeks! ahaah .. corey's got a crazyyyy setup, jesus,,

Their is so much stuff I carry around normally, sometimes I forget I have it until I need it

For the winter I add

On me pretty much all the time

and a few other things that are with me more often than not

Some of these are changed, omitted, or supplemented, depending on the season, weather, or plans for the trip


On a survival side note, a challenge!

You have 1 match left and have to start a fire for the night, can you do it?
No paper,candles,or other pre made or purchased fire starters allowed
no petroleum accelerates (gas, diesel, oil, bearing grease...)
And yes it is possible

 

If it's a paper match then I can split it down the middle and have two. As far as tinder goes you can take your knife of choice and find a tree with easily peeled bark (birch/cedar/cotton wood etc) and scrape some off, just make sure it's "fluffy". If you're next to water and can find them you can also use cattail cotton as tinder, works very very well. Once you have the tinder it's easy to set up for a fire just be sure and collect a lot more wood than you think you'll use.

Oh and here is my survival stuff.

 

Bonus points for Junkers88. these amongst others are survival skills we should be practicing before we need theme. Make it a camping challenge amongst friends, first one with sustained fire gets bragging rights, last one owes the others a beverage
