The more I think about doing the MS on your 22re the more I think that it could be the perfect mod.

You could chuck the restrictive MAF and really open it up for power as well as fuel economy, something to think about..
I'm thinking about it. What version do I need to go with? I am horrible with electrical.

The MS-II 3.57 with a relay board and harness would support both spark and fuel totally programable and seems to be the easiest setup to install. I will do some more research and ask my MS guru buddy what he thinks.

The EDIS ignition is cheap and easy to install and gives you totally programable ignition when paired with the MSII. MS installation manual strongly recommends the EDIS.

I think this might be the way to go for all the 22re's- the PCB 2.2 , ($240) pre assembled kit, include the optional msns firmware for ignition control.

Adding the relay board ($88), and the relay cable($70) for ease of installation and circuit protection would be worth it to me.

I knew next to nothing about MS systems a month ago but after pouring over thier info I am starting to get the picture. If you decide to go this route you will have to learn the basics at least, It's a do it yourself (DIY) kit.
But it sure would be helpful to have a techie buddy nearby.(I have one)
This link will get you started with the right questions and I will try to post up most of my installation.

Pulled my 22re and 340F tranny today, took right at 5 hrs to have both sitting on the shop floor.
I am still waiting on the mounts, headers and Adapter kit - should be here this week but I wanted a few days to remove the old mounts, pressure wash and paint the engine compartment and mount the MS controller and relay. I also need to identify some wiring from the old harness.
I should make some serious progress this week.

Took you less time to take your engine out than mine... Good luck with the swap!

Who knew that after you get all the crap out of the way these 4runners have alot of room. Won't need the steering reservoir, air box, coil and 90% of the engine loom.... I like this swap more every day!

Santa came early

You never know what your going to get when you order a swap kit for the first time, but I have to say this is quality stuff.
I test fit it this afternoon.
Advance Adapters kits rock!
And the engine mounts are beefy too.

Yes I am using a 21 spline gear drive Tcase with the forward shifter, the adapter will accomodate either forward or top shift.
I will post up more detailed pics of the parts and thier relation in the coming days.

A little info when I was doing mine:

I had to remove the snap ring that holds the bearing in place on the front of the transfercase. The snap ring prevents the adapter from seating fully against the transfercase. I did not see anything in the instructions about that. The adapter prevents the bearing from moving so a snap ring is not needed.

This looks little different than mine, but it is the lower one in this picture

Thank's Rocket I will check that tomorrow.
I installed the 2" 4crawler body lift with new neoprene bushings today and removed my old engine mounts from the frame and ground the welds.
I should make some progress in the next few days.
I love the way the body lift makes the 4runner look.. more aggressive.

While test fitting the 4.3 with headers and mounts attached I found that it required moving my fuel line and slightly bending the brake lines on the passenger side of the engine bay to position them directly above and outside of the frame.

The headers, mounts and new starter look good. This part of the swap goes way too slow with all of the test fitting... but ya gotta get it right.

Headers on the driver side, note the upward bends to take the runners away from the steering and the tight taper that it takes to get the collector inside the frame. This swap needs custom headers!

engine mount positions

When positioning the 4.3 engine with the Advance Adapters mounts on the 1985 4runner, 20 1/4 " to the center of the mount from the front frame crossmember worked best for me, the mount is close to flush with the bottom of the frame.

Working on the theory that lower and farther back is better this is as far back as I was comfortable with. This position combined with the AA adapter and a 700r4 and forward shift gear drive T'case nets a 2 3/4" longer tranny relative to the crossmember. I am fabing a plate to weld to the crossmember to accomodate the transfer case mount.

Plenty of clearance in front even with the stock fan and radiator, should be more than enough for the aftermarket ones on the way!
