newb 3.4 wiring question
Sorry for the newb question. I am doing a 3.4 conv. My question is I have a auto trans harness and ecu. The truck I am using is a manual trans. I know I can trick the auto ecu to think the trans in neutrual and use the auto trans ecu and harness. I also have a 3.4 manual trans ecu. Can I get a manual trans ecu plug from toyota and eliminate the auto trans wires from the auto trans engine wiring harness and make my own manual trans engine harness. I've looked at mitchell wiring dia. and it apears that I can. Would anyone know the toyota part number for a manual trans engine harness ecu plug.

I put a 3.4L out of a 99 tacoma in my 4runner. The taco's motor was auto, and 4wd..
My 4runner is a 5speed. so what i did was i connected the wires for the park/neutral safety switch. and its bee working fine.
If you have a manual ecu for the same year, i would try to use that, but if not, the auto can work.

I have read your entire thread. Spent an hour but it was really good.
Anyway, that was all you had to do. I remember reading something somewhere about adding a bunch of resistors to fool the computer for shift point s whatnot.
You ever get yours approved through the referee?

haven't gone to the ref yet..
I just smogged in December of last year, so i have some time to get everything done first.
Over on pirate, i asked pretty much what needed to be done to make the auto ecu work. Nobody could give me a direct answer, but one guy meantioned using a bunch of resistors to make the computer work accuratly..
All i did was connect those two wires. for the park neutral saftey switch. They were right next to each other on my harness. I believe they were plugs 13d/14d on the harness. all i did was use a connector that clamped the two together, and its worked fine.
I don't have anything connected to the trans at the moment, so no reverse lights, and no 4wd indicator in the dash, but i haven't had any CEL's.
Last tank of gas i got 19mpg... and with the way it runs, i say its doing great!

ya i saw that post but couldnt remember where. I dont care about 4x4 light (i can look at transfer case and when do you really forget your in 4x4) could manually hook up reverse lights too i guess.
Just dont want a bunch of CEL codes though.
thanks

I'm still researching for the manual trans ecu plug. I hope it is not the one that is discontinued. I can use the auto. ecu if I have to but I would like to eliminate the auto trans wires and use the manual trans ecu if I can, just to get rid the auto trans stuff, cause if it will go wrong it will with me. I have been looking for a manual trans wiring harness every where. The salvage yards around here cut the engine harness at the fire wall and pull the ecu, then throw away the ecu plug.

well we are brothers in arms I guess cause I think that I will be in the same boat unless Iget lucky and find a 5speed donor.
There was a post somewhere when someone (I thought Jason4x4 or TMZ) listed out a bunch of resistors for all the trans connections that would make the trans think that it was shifting properly and whatnot. Cant remember exactly. I tried search with "resistor, transmission" and different combos of that but cant find it. hell maybe it was another site.
I knew that I should have saved that page!!!!!!!!!

No that isnt is(read this thread too though ). The post i remember actually listed out the values of the resistors from each trans plug/wire. I was pretty long and detailed.
If I remember right the poster wasn't exactly sure but that the configuration that he posted said it SHOULD work.
I tried Googling "toyota transmission resistor shift, 3.4" and didnt find it either. Hell, maybe I was dreaming that I read it.

the 97 truck i bought as a donor was an auto... i sold the auto ecu and bought a 5sp ecu from a junk yard. i then bought the wiring harness new from the dealership. it was almost 400 bucks but worth not having to worry about the auto ecu issues. if you have a 5sp ecu call the dealership with the part number of the ecu and they should be able to find the wiring harness

Will I need the 3.4 body harness plugs at the ecu to adapt the 3.0 wiring the the 3.4 ecu. correct. So will the 3.0 terminals (fact crimped wire ends) fit the 3.4 plug or do I need to get some of the 3.4 wires to soldier to the 3.0 wires. I have to be neat and not butcher the doner trucks wiring, it belongs to a friend who gave me the 3.4 and wiring because he went with a 350 chevy in his taco. Sorry for the questions I don't have everything out of the doner truck yet and its not near by to look at and compare parts to.
