Which motor and tranny do I need?

Hello,

I have a chance to buy a 1990 toyota pickup. ext cab, automatic, with a 3.0 thats no good. no rust, good shape, nice interior etc... for $600.
I'm heading to work and won't be able to do anymore searching and am looking at the truck after work. From what searching i have done there is conflicting info in difference threads.
Will the 3.4l bolt onto the auto trans or not? Some say no, others say yet but have a error code on all the time etc... Some threads are old though.

Just trying to figure out if i should get the truck if it looks as good in person as it does i the pics.

I've got a regular cab Nissan now and would really like the extra leg room and power of this toyota setup if it will work out.

Thanks for the info in advance.

As far as I know yes they will. R150 (I believe is the trans code) Will match the 3.4. The big issue is to find an engine to match the tranny you have. you just want the ECU's to match. Just my .02

I believe if you're truck is an auto, you have to get the donor motor from an auto for the computer to get signals from the tranny

I don't know where you are at but here in colorado springs /denver, auto 3.4 engine are easy to find its the manual one that are hard to find. Be sure to get the whole package. You want an uncut harness with ECU that matches the engine year (preferably from the same donor vehicle)

The R150 is a manual trans. Yes the 3.4 will bolt to the existing trans in the truck. Yes it will drive down the road. Yes you may see DTC's and imcorrect shift patterns. The correct way to do this is use the auto trans from a 3.4 and get the adapter for the older style t-case.

Yah i think finding a wrecked one at a yard may be a good option so i can get all of what i need from it. I need to get to researching and see what my options are.
Probably going to need some more money!! LOL

I'm about 9 hours from Denver(Iowa) so thats doable if i needed to.
I've got quite a bit of salvage yards near me, but never done this kind of thing so not sure what thier policys are for the engine(warranty) etc...
But very comfortable fabbing things up, welder, plasma cutter.. etc.. so not worried about any of that if its needed.

The adventure begins!

Well I just picked up the engine on Friday afternoon. Cleaned it off this weekend. Re routed the fuel line, thats about it so far. I will pickup the new clutch and some other stuff the next pay check I get. Mine is a little different then yours, manual trans. And its a 93 4Runner, but very excited to get this started. Cadman, Mt. Goat, FillRunner and Evolta have bunches of info on the swaps.

Gravehunter,

Good luck with your swap.

Also there is a "multiquote" button on each post if you want to reply to multiple posts.

Multiquote click each one until the last one and then hit quote and it will quote them all so you can do one post for all your responses.

yawn..... lots of hours reading swap info... need more coffee.

So far to keep my stock auto trans i need a 3.4 with injector harness out of a 4x4 tacoma and use a t-100 ECU and wiring harness instead of the tacomas so i don't throw codes.

I'm still researching... but just tossing that out there to see if anyone objects.
