Gearing post-swap ?

Hi all,

As I work through the 3.4 swap I'm also trying to plan for gears, tires, lift, etc. as part of the build. My 93 4Runner current has 4.56 gears with a manual transmission. I've got a super saggy rear end that I'd like to fix, but I'm trying to figure out what's going to make best overall setup. I currently have relatively new 31" BFG AT's on stock wheels.

From what I've read the RPM's would be a bit high and fuel mileage a bit low if I was to stick with the 4.56 gear and 31" tire setup after the 3.4 swap. So I'm thinking two alternatives:

1. Re-gear to 4.30 gears, stick with the 31's, and fix the rear sag with Moog 225 coils (short-term solution).

2. Keep the 4.56 gears, sell the 31's, buy 33's, buy FJ rear coils, BJ spacers, etc. to make a better offroad setup.

The rig's use is a mild wheeler / family camper / short distance commuter while getting back into the Colorado mountains so I'm wanting to make sure I have the power to haul some gear up the mountain while managing MPG and not spending a ton

Love to get your alls thoughts as I prepare.
Eric

Option 1. IMO you're not going to gain much "wheeling ability" (compared to the cost or changing tires) with the swap from 31s to 33s. The BJ spacers might help a small amount however. Best bang for the buck? Sell your 4.56s, but some 4.10s (like I have and are great with the 3.4) and add a rear locker.

Yep. 4.10s will probably work best for your situation.

Thanks for your feedback guys. I'm liking the idea of sticking with the 31's and regearing down. It's good to hear the 4.11's work well with the 3.4 and 31's.

The next ?' are definitely out of the 3.4 swap realm, but I thought I'd ask here anyway. I'll move to the offroad tech section for more specifics as well.

It looks like new Yukon R&P 4.11's run about $220 for the front and $200 for the rear. Rough pricing on a Lock Right for the Toyota 8" is around $325. Do you guys have major concerns with sourcing used R&P gears? Also, if you could do it over again would you have gone with the Lock Right or some other auto locking option?

Thanks again for your feedback!
Eric

I personally like getting whole low mileage third members. They are already set up. I love my Lock Right but I don't have anything to compare it to. It acts, shall I say, predictably. Once you get a feel for it you can tell when it will unlock and when it's going to lock up or push you in a turn, etc. It's never bucked or banged on me.
