Hey, I've been planning out my swap for a few months (waiting for money to copulate and multiply like God intended) and have read tons on this and other sources. Most people seem to be swapping out 3.0's, some even 22re's, but my 85 originally had an 22R.

I read thru the couple of 22R swaps and nobody seems to mention the fuel pump or tank in their threads, but a friend raised the question. Will I need to swap out my fuel pump for something from a EFI setup? If so, any suggestions on years? It was also mentioned that the tank may need to be swapped out for the mounting of the pump.

for any others searching, if/when swapping from 22R to 5vz (or any EFI model motor) an electric fuel pump is needed.

External pumps will work with non-efi tanks, but there are many reports of shortened life spans of external pumps due to no baffles in non-EFI tanks and the sloshing of fuel as a result. The theory being that the sloshing fuel starves the external pump causing it to burn out prematurely.

 

And internal pumps run cooler--increasing its longevity

 

Makes sense Doug, my tank has a little pan that the fuel pump pickup sits in. I think the fuel return line is dumping into that pan, helping to keep the pickup screen covered with gas even when the tank is very low. Before I changed out my pump (required for supercharger fueling needs) I purposely ran out of gas and was amazed just how empty I got the tank.



So are you going to swap the tank for another?

 

Dale, I don't see any foam or baffles in there... was that an older non-efi tank? or ??

I am going to swap mine out, but I'm still weighing my options of what to put in. I won't be simply adding an external pump to the non-efi tank since the sloshing of fuel has me slightly concerned. The stock tank sizes stayed the same up till the mid 90's so I could just grab another toyota efi tank. But Troy brought up a good point. Eventually I want to flat belly this thing and relocate the fuel tank. His point is, if I'm going to buy something else, why not just go to an after market fuel cell? I have found a few that would mount nicely up in the frame rails.

 

It's my stock 93 tank. I think that pan in it could be considered a baffle.

But yeah if you have to get a different tank I like the idea of a fuel cell that fits up higher and tighter

 

I happen to be making ANOTHER custom tank for my 4runner. It will go where the old spare used to go.

First tank was a learning lesson...this tank will be as if made by the gods themselves.....Just kidding--but it will be long and shallow--thinking 26"x34"x6"---increasing to ?? as it gets closer to the front......It will be baffled inside....will keep ya'll posted
