Rob is right the cost isn't worth it. I would recommend making an adapter by cutting the body plugs out of the donor and cutting the body plugs off the old 3.0 harness. Then you can build the adapter on your coffee table and solder all the connections. It makes it a lot more reliable and you can remove it if you need to fix something or want to swap it into something else. I bet you can get some of the wiring diagrams from guys on the forum.

I think as far as the body harness go they are the same. I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure. The interior wiring is different because of the rear window, the wiper, the speakers, etc but I'm pretty sure the engine and body plugs are the same from truck to truck. Actually I'm 99% positive because I used body plugs from a 90 auto pickup in my swap and they were exactly the same except it wasn't 4wd.

None of that matters.

All you're doing is wiring up the engine computer. Wipers, etc, are not controlled by the ECU. You're looking at wiring up things like the speed sensor and power. Nothing else.

My engine/ECU came from a 97 Tacoma. No problems with the 91 4Runner.

Does it matter if the 3.4 is out of a 2wd or 4wd? Also I heard the 99 and up have bigger injectors and the MAF is changed? And the engine ECU is totally separate from the tranny controller, so I can use a 3.4(that had an auto behind it) in front of my R150F without any wiring problems, right?

Sorry, /hyjack

You really want to get a 4WD ECM and harness. I think the MAF came in 2000 but I don't know about a separate tranny controller. I think you can use an auto ECM and harness with a manual by tricking it into thinking it's in neutral the whole time but someone wrote something about that causing mapping issues or some such thing. Sorry there are some many "I think" "something" "someone"s, but all the specifics seem to blend together these days.

Its safe to get the ecu with the same motor from the donor to not f things up...if you cant find one for same year/tranny, you might be down a while looking for said ecu...
But 1500...how many miles...?

If you find the complete engine with ECU and uncut harness, yes, jump on it. Or, better yet, just buy it. That won't be as painful as when you land on the engine.

Just thought I'd jump in and say that the 99-up injectors are not bigger, their design is just a little bit different and they are just a plastic body. pre-99 injectors and post-99 injectors are completely interchangeable AFAIK. Hard to say if they're better or worse (the plastic bodies can crack if clamped incorrectly), but their flow ratings are basically the same.

Not sure about MAF, but they did start using throttle by wire in 2001 I think, which could change things in the swap.

1500 for a 3.4 with low miles is a pretty good deal but like scuba said, If you don't get the correct ECU with the purchase you'll be searching quite a bit. An auto ECU will go for at least $100. You also have to consider the tranny. I spent about $2k for a motor, tranny, accessories, crossmember, and all the little bits and pieces I needed. You might be able to find a better deal. Just FYI

No throttle by wire on my 2001, I think it was after 2002, like 03 or mid 02.
