ECU year VS 5vze year & CA Smog.

Hey guys I am a noob to this forum and have a couple questions related to Smoging in CA and the 3.4 swap. I have spent days researching this swap my question is not yet answered.

I am in the midst of purchasing parts for a 3.4 to 93 AT 4x4. I am doing it for a close friend of mine and he is by no means a mechanic. What this means is since it is my first swap and is being delivered as a reliable daily driver, I am spending the money for the pro parts from ORS. The next rig I'll do the wire mess myself.

I bought a 97 T100 4X4 5VZ ECU due to keeping the A340.

I have an engine which will be picked up tomorrow it is a 2wd 99 Tacoma 3.4 85k EVERY item required the guy is letting go for 1200.

The 4x4 harness will be from a 97 4 runner

Will CA Smog let me get away with non matching engine ECU years?

Now I know it would be better to get it all from one truck but I haven't found and 4x4 T100 out here yet.
Thanks

For the official answer, call 1-800- 622-7733, leave a message with the receptionist (or whatever their title is) and a CA SMOG Ref will call you back in 2-3 days.

Now, for the unofficial answer:
You will smog the vehicle based on ECU. So for this swap, it will be smogged as a '97 T100 4x4 A/T, that means, you will need to have all the emission equipment that a 97 4x4 A/T T100 had from the factory (charcoal canister, O2 sensors, catalytic converter, vacuum lines, possibly an EGR valve, etc).

The engine doesn't matter, it could be from a 95.5 or an 04, 4Runner, Tacoma, Tundra, T100, doesn't matter.

You'll just need to make sure that all the sensors on the 99 Tacoma block will work with the 97 T100 ECU.

You'll need to re-pin the 97 4Runner harness to match the 97 T100 ECU.

You will likely have an issue with the 99's MAF at TPS not matching the 97 T100's, so you may need to get others from a junkyard/partout.

The best thing you can do, is to start thinking about everything in terms of "97 4x4 A/T T100" and make sure that everything matches what's needed for a 97 T100 (that might mean replacing some of the 99 Tacoma parts).

And, welcome and good luck!

Read the above reply, and then read it again. Perfect explanation.

Read twice, understood makes perfect sense, thanks! I acquired the engine today from a totalled 97 4 Runner, with 108 miles. Nothing is known about the engine except air filter was Toyota and new. 90 day warranty.

With the 99 Tacoma 3.4 w 85k, I unfortunately and fortunately found the man was lying as the engine had a solid 300k of crud on almost every part of the engine.

Pulled the harness today waiting for 3.4 harness and ecu to arrive in mail. Then is off to Cliff at TOS to be integrated.

I need an air box mine has the support tangs broken off. This is the unit with the plastic angle piece to support MAF. Know of anyone that has one?

Thanks guys

Just what year MAF sensor are you running ??

If you are using the MAF for a 97 I should have one soon.

But me being on the east coast you should find one closer.
