3.4 swap vss question

So recently swaped a 3.4 into my wife's wheeler. Everything is good but cel is allways on because the ecu is wanting a vss signal. Truck is a82 so it has no vss. Is there a way to trick the ecu or do i need to hook up a vss to solve my check engine light? Any insight on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know of a way to trick the ECM.

Can you upgrade your speedo to a more modern one?

I wonder if you could somehow split your cable and feed both your stock speedo, and maybe a 90's one and hide it in the dash? Just thinking out loud. Don't know if that will work.

Can you simply install a vss into your current transmission or transfer case if it's 4x4?

What transmission, transfer case do you have?

I have a vss collecting dust I'll trade for some recovery gear.

Tacoma 5 spd and a couple 81-83cases. I would like to retain my stock instrument cluster. I seen on the internet Marlin crawler has an adapter deal. that the cable goes through and also has the three wires for the vehicle speed sensor. I'm not really sure if that is what I need.

The marlin adapter is what I run but your issue is trying to retain the stock cable driven speedo, and add a vss for the ECM. The marlin adapter isn't pass thru, so you'd have to go either electrical signal, or cable but not both. You need both.

I didn't have this issue so I really cannot help. I'll be interested as to what others have to say as this may be in my future soon for my nephew.

Again thinking out loud, but I wonder if you couldn't use multi speed sender outputs. I cannot remember assembling my dual cases but with the trans and both cases you have 3 places to accept speedo senders. Wondering if you couldn't have your existing speedo sender run your stock speedo, and add an electric vss into the tranny hole to drive the ECM.

This may be nonsense. Not even sure that would work honesty. I'd call marlin on Monday and explain what you are trying to do. Mike has an old dash like yours and a 3rz so he had to have the same issue I would think. His is california smogged so he had to get it worked out.

You should still have a speed signal from the speedo to the ecu. Thats what I've done for all cable speedo swaps i've done. Ecu will be happy with that speed signal.

Vital, That's what I had to do with my 88. Does the 82 have that available? It never had an ECM to send a signal to.

I heard 90s trucks have vss in the speedo itself. not sure if that's true or not. makes me wonder if the land cruisers vss sender is my solution. ill look up the lc vss and try to find out.

my 88 has a vss signal from the speedo, i'm running the stock gear drive TC with cable speedometer. my truck came with cruise control.

maybe you could swap the instrument cluster from a newer truck if yours did not have a cruise option with the vss signal.
should be able to use a newer cluster from the first year it was available as an option
and wire it in to the ecu.
