My own personal nightmare:

Everything came apart and went back together alright though, almost done but decided it was too dark to finish.

I dunno about everybody else, but this is the best I could do at pulling the wires through the firewall:

This is my routing in the engine compartment:

Tomorrow I may try a different route, cause right now I couldn't get the kick panel over the ecu if I wanted to.

Hopefully tomorrow will be firing day, just to see if wiring is ok. Then a quick shut down since I don't have exhaust yet.

I got mine to fit quite nicely. I routed the engine harness lower than you though. It goes below the clutch bracket and between the Evap canister. My ORS harness doesn't go through the engine harness grommet either. I don't have AC lines so it may not be an option for you.
It's alot easier to work in there if you pull the heater blower box out.

I managed to turn it enough the kick panel would cover it this morning...maybe I was tired and it was dark or somethin last night. Go figure.

I may still reroute it later, but for now it looks alright.

I went back through there with the ORS harness cause I figured it'd be easier to run the wires along the firewall than to get them through the smaller grommets on the driver's side.

Maybe that was wrong too, but if it works, I ain't gonna fix it!

Thanks for showing me your routing.

Edit: I'm an idiot.

The instructions do say to route a couple wires through the pass. side firewall, but then DOWN to the tranny to wire in reverse and 4wd lights, not across the firewall like I did. Good thing I hadn't really secured 'em yet!

And we have ignition!!!

Forgot to tighten the pos. battery cable so it didn't do anything at first...found that, fixed it, and it started up pretty quick. Ran it for 15 seconds, just long enough to know that my sensors weren't going to shut me down and that everything had power and ground where it was s'posed to.

Thanks! And especially thanks for your help figuring stuff out.

However...not done yet.

My tach mod didn't take, I realized I'm missing some of my heater ducting because of the nest of wires that were attached to the alarm took it's place, and my backup lights don't work. Plus I have to get my exhaust situation remedied, among other stuff. I'd guess I'm still at least a week away from driving it.

On the backup lights, did anyone else have to wire it to the 3.4 engine harness as well, or just the ORS harness?

Almost looks like it's s'posed to be there!

Ha! Yeah, another reason I only ran it for 15 seconds.

My ORS harness took care of that.

Yeah, the ORS harness was just a plug & play install. Mine only had 4 wires that required splicing; dash power, tach, starter trigger and 4wd indicator switch. Other than a bad oil pressure gauge I've had zero electrical problems.

Right, so remember those backup lights of mine, the ones that weren't working? I decided to look into that today and do some heavy duty diagnostics after I picked up my crossover from that shop.

I pulled the lens, looked at each bulb, took a pic of the switch on the Tacoma tranny to see if maybe that one would work and I could just replace it to test that theory. I figured it could be any number of things, being as old as the car is and all the wires I removed with the alarm, NO way could it be Mike's harness, right...well it wasn't Mike's harness. It was me and my normal wiring prowess again. I mean, anybody could've done it...I didn't push the plug onto the switch all the way. Go ahead, laugh all you want, I deserve it.

So here's the crossover pipe from that craigslist ad:

Looks like it'll do the trick, I'm still planning to get the headers from Downey when they have some available.

Mike said no problem about emailing him, i ordered the last kit availabe, and he's gotten a few more parts for me as well (turned out my motor was a 97 and wiring harness wouldnt work, so he ordered a brand new 98 taco harness for me, decent price)...

No progress today, stayed home to spend some time with my girl, only to get the "I love you, you're a great friend, but I can't do the distance thing when you move to Cali" talk.

Back at it tomorrow!
