3.4 Swap Alternator Belt Options

Thought I'd share this info. Stuck a 3.4 in my 88 that had a 22RE. My alt hits my steering rag joint with the stock belt.

Stock belt is 42" 4PK1050

I ran a 40.5" belt and it slips over the pulley at the minimum adjustment. No mods to the alt bracket at all. Plenty of room to clear my steering even after adjustments for stretch.

NOTE: THIS IS FOR REAR SUMP PAN. Front sump dip stick MAY interfere with how far the alt moves. Check before buying belt. Check www.crossbelts.com for other options.

The shorter 40.5" belt I used is a (Bando) 4PK1030

(Dayco) 5040405

(Gates) K5040405

(NAPA) 25-K5040405

Stock belt is 42.625" by my sources. I tried to use a shorter alt belt- a 41.25" belt, which is 7/8" shorter than stock. However, it caused my the alternator to be shoved into the lower radiator hose. Back to stock size for me now.

This is FWIW, of course, it appears this is a difference in the 22re vs 3vze. I also used all the stock rad hoses, just cut and or flipped and twisted them to make them work.

Yeah, I found some discrepancies on actual belt sizes depending on the manufacturer.

I went through a few belts before I found the best one for my swap. Thought I'd save some time and frustration for anybody having alt clearance issues.

That chart on the link is handy. Wish I had found it before numerous trips to the parts store. Most parts people I have dealt with just want to look up stock parts and aren't very helpful on CUSTOM applications.
