Mmkay, after a lot of foiled attempts I am forced to ask a newb-ish question here...

On my 98 3.4, can I bypass the oil cooler entirely?

I am looking to eliminate the cooler lines, oil cooler thing, and all that mess. I hate HATE hate engine bay clutter; I will run a sandwich plate oil cooler if needed.

I have seen so many inconclusive posts on this; I'm asking here to avoid dumbassery as much as possible.

I don't need a lecture in thermodynamics, cooling properties, etc... all I want to know is can I block off the cooling and oil ports and still run my engine?

It's going into an 85 4Runner, which shouldn't make any difference. 2-core aluminum radiator, Volvo 2 speed fan, shroud, and all that crap.

 

only way I know of , is to just put another oil filter on it ...

gets rid of the coolant lines at least .. just make sure u replace to water pump as well , one with out the towing option

Well, I've seen no posts on this. So pardon my ignorance. But I have to ask. Why can't you use the 3VZ-E parts to do this? Somebody has tried to do that right? I googled and didn't see it mentioned anywhere.

If you don't already know what I'm talking about, many 3VZ-Es don't have an oil cooler(despite having a location for it). No 88s had one, and probably very few, if any, 89s did. So there's a purpose built bypass on them instead, a.k.a. the oil hole cover plate/"fire hydrant plug". Which I'd be VERY surprised if it didn't bolt right on to a 5VZ-FE. And there's a hex plug for the coolant hole in the block too. Which should also fit a 5VZ-FE. As for the water pump, I can probably think of at least half a dozen ways to solve that. Besides installing one without the tube. Remove the tube and plug the hole. Cap the tube. Crimp/weld/braze the tube closed. Etc., etc..

I'm so confident the 3VZ-E parts would work, I'd go ahead and order them.

Wait...I guess the better question is...do all 5VZ-FEs have an oil cooler?

EDIT: No, apparently they do not. And I just confirmed the 3VZ-E parts do in fact work on a 5VZ-FE. Same part #s for both engines.

EDIT 2: No, you can't just block off the oil ports. Coolant ports, yes. But if you block the oil ports you'll have no oil flowing to the engine components that need it. Oil pump --> Oil filter --> Oil cooler --> the rest of the engine. Some engines have the cooler before the filter(e.g. 2WD 3VZ-E).

also yes .. you wouldn't need to replace the water pump , or even remove the tube .. Supra has rubber block off part #'s available for this

That is exactly what I was looking for; too bad I put on a new water pump with the bypass outlet a few months ago. This is a very slow 3.4 swap.

I have never seen that fire hydrant plug/cover, I thought all 3.4s had this goofy cooler setup, I'm not too familiar with the V6s yet... I've been a 20/22 guy for years though. This is a new chapter and I'm happy to learn everything I can about these engines; even if the 1UZ is the new 5VZ swap.

Great info I'm doing a 3.4 swap on an 88 right now and noticed this. I was gunna just move the cooler delete parts from my 3.0 but decided to look around if it worked first so I'm doin it now thanks 🙏
