Greetings All...

I'm a newbe so please be patient if come across sounding a little confused.

I have FINALLY found all the components, and I'm ready to start the swap. I plan on doing the wiring myself, and after going over the schematics, I have one question/problem.

Vehical Details...

My truck in a 91 4x4 pick-up with a 5 speed transmission. The 3.4L engine I'm using is from a 98 Tacoma 5 speed. From the schematics it looks like the 98 Tacoma has a speed sensor in the tranny/transfer case that hooks-up to the 98 combmeter. (three wire plug.. V1 or V10) The signal from the sensor in the 98 tranny is used for the "electronic speedo" located in the 98 combmeter, and from there it looks like the signal goes to the 98 ECU.

The problem/issue I'm having a hard time getting my head around is...

After crawling under my truck and having a look at the 91s schematics, it seems the 91 doesn't have a speed sensor in the tranny. (Mechanical speedo only) It does however have a speed sensor in it's combmeter, which I planned on hooking up directly to the 98 ECU.

So my question is.... has anyone here run into the same problem/issue and if so, what did they do... ie) new sensor/tranny or will the signel from the 91 combmeter speed sensor work ok with the 98 ECU?

I hope this makes sence... and thanx in advance for any help.

the speed sensor is in the speedo.

 

The '91 has a mechanical speedometer cable from the transmission to the combo-meter; in the combo-meter is a speed sensor that converts the mechanical signal to an electric signal that connected to the "SPD" terminal of the 3.0L ECU. Simply splice this wire to the "SP1" wire on the 3.4L ECU (this is for a 96/97 4Runner, a 98 Tacoma may be different).

 

Yeah, what SacRunner said. I just ran a wire from inst. cluster to sp1 on 95/96 ECU.

I've got the opposite problem right now. 93 truck with a t-case 3 pin sensor and the donor 96 t100 mechanical speed sensor, therefore there is no wires provided for me in my donors harness to wire my speed sensor into. still workin that part out right now.

 

You should still have a spd wire from the instrument cluster though. no?

 

The 3 pin sensor has a power, and I believe 2 signals. You use your old trans harness and run them into the cab and just connect them as they would be connected normally into the body harness. The cluster will still send a signal to the ecu from the cluster which also connects at the body harness to ecu.

The power wire is the wire that says "spd" from my ECU connector right? if so im not sure which wire of the 3 to solder into that wire
