Cool you've solved my problem!!!!

regarding my earlier post on the strange humming vibration coming from the right front wheel (see; "what the . . . !!??") EXCELLENT HELP, fellers! that slinky link took me right to the identical problem - same symptoms, same cold temp sensitivity, etc . . . haven't tried shifting into 4 wheel to see if that stops it, yet, but am guessing it will. i'm taking it into my trusted mechanic in the morning, and i'm sure he'll look sideways at me when i tell him to check the grease at spindle/axleshaft . . . heheeheeee, i love it! i do have one question though - in that to me, ADD is attention deficit disorder, and i don't think i have that, but i did know a guy one time who . . . ooops . . . anyway, i don't have manual hubs, i just throw my little shifter inside and go. so tell me . . . do i have . . . (gulp) ADD?

i'm greatly relieved to know that this isn't a major rebuilding issue . . . thanks a bunch. i don't yet have any service manuals, and i know absolutely nothing about this vehicle, except that i like it more and more everyday. THANK YOU for the great leads!

btw, matt, thanks for the offer to help - i'm up in estes, literally at the south entrance to the park. elk, bear, coyote, & the occasional mountain lion in the front yard - trout stream 30 yards out the front door. you're welcome to come up anytime . . . been snowing now for 4 days nonstop. the count

Yes, I'm afraid you do. We're your support group for that...

HAHAHA!! Glad to be able to help. Its a very common problem in cold climates. In later models that bushing was replaced with a bearing. There is a lot of labor required to get in there and just add some fresh grease. You can get away with letting it go till the next brake job if you can deal with the noise till then.

I think someone got a dealership to replace the brass bushing with the bearing setup for free after they convinced the service manager that it was a design flaw. That might be worth a shot.

ADD in Toyota truck terms means Automatic Differential Disconnect. Its a vaccum actuated collar that connects one of the axle shafts to the differential when you pull the short lever and in some cases push a button. With this system the CV axleshafts always turn, even in 2wd. Also the side gears in the diff always turn but the ring and pinion gears and driveshaft do not.
