What to lube the speedo cable with?

I have one of the squealy speedo cables and have removed it to lube it with something. I'd rather not use something like WD-40, I don't want to go through this again. Is something like axle grease better? Does anyone know what the factory calls for?

If I remember correctly, doesnt the cable pull out of the Sheath?

If Yes:
You could try pulling it out and coating the cable in "White Lithium" grease, then slide it back in.

Although, I think partially why it makes the noise is there is some wear to the "Sheath" from the inside. Replacing the enitre cable is best.

Another good lubricant for stuff like that is called LUBRI-PLATE. I have had excellent results using this product on a speedo-cable in a older Toyota truck. I necer heard another noise from the cable again. Good luck.

Yes.... Lubri-plate is great stuff.... Thats actually what I had in my mind when I said "White Lithium". But now thinking about it, I dont think Lubri-plate is a Lithium.

USE Lubri-plate on the speedo cable.

Any tips on removing the guage cluster to get to the cable in a 1st gen 4R? I've got some squeeling going on and a burn out dash light, so I need to get to the bottom of it.

Well, before I could read the previous posts, I pulled the cable out of it's sheath and coated it with white lithium grease. The sqealing hadn't been going on too long and I couldn't see any evidence of the cable fraying. Hopefully the sheathing will last for quite awhile with this. The noise is gone now.
