My '91 4Runner has 225,000 Km (155, 300 mi.) and has never had a timing belt replaced. It's a 22R 4-banger.
Is there any urgency to replace the timimg belt, or do I wait until it starts to make noise?

wooow, i had mine changed at 95K it wasnt going bad or making any noise, but id rather do it when it was in for service, than be stranded on the highway somewhere, just my thoughts.

Unles they are different from the trucks, the 22r does not have a belt...it has a chain.

 

So do you think if it's a chain, and it isn't making any noise, I can leave it?

 

I suggest you change it soon as you can...

I had an 88 4runner with a 22re I was too lazy to
change it.The chain had been bad for a while, but I went 4 wheeling anyways. the tensioner and the guides had broke and fell into the oil pan. they clogged the oil filter and since the engine wasnt getting any lubrication one of the connecting rods bent. I suggest you change it before it gets too bad, though if you dont abuse the vehicle it may last longer.

I wouldnt just go out and get the chain changed. I would have a trained, trusted professional inspect the guides and tensioner and show them to you. I have seen many 22re's go over 200K miles on the same chain.

 

I agree with 96 Runner.....get a trusted mechanic to check things out for you. My 22r had a little over 180,000 on the original chain when I sold it 4 years ago.

I have a friend with an 82 4wd with atleast 280,000 miles on the engine.....when I can get in touch with him I will find out how many miles he got out of his chain.
