Tailgate is hard to open

Tailgate is hard to open
For some reason or another my tailgate is really hard to open. It's kind of hard to explain. It's like the latching system is failing...Oh and I should mentioned that I added a little bit of dynomat to the tailgate...as a result I have to assist the gate to get it all the way open. Any ideas what I could do to solve the latching system? TIA
