Jumpy idle

,,,,,,So I just put a new engine in, had trouble with a bad TPS but supposedly had a new one properly set by mechanic but my idle is still jumping up and down from 1000-1500rpm?!?!?!? It's driving me crazy as well as making it hard to drive at low speed. It doesn't seem to do it till the car warms up??? Could it be a missplaced vacuum line? Thanks, TIM

Yes, definitely check your vacuum lines. I found a loose one yesterday and it completely solved a hesitation problem during acceleration. The engine runs much smoother now. In fact, I tugged on a couple of the lines and if they pulled out too easily, I clamped with down with heater hose clamps that you can find at any hardware store.

Thanks.......

.......I'll check them all again but I think there may actually be one in the wrong place but don't know how to tell which ones they are or where they belong?!?!?

If you have a 22R then you have the famous air bubble in the coolant. If the idle fluctuates up and down at a repetitive interval then it's an air pocket. If you have a large funnel to stick in the radiator and bleed the air out, that will work best. Or you can just keep filling up the radiator and overflow bottle until the system burps all the air out. It could take a while, especially if you have no t-stat or a malfunctioning one. It never hurts to park on an incline and make sure your heater is on. What you're experiencing is very common on the 22R's when the engine's cooling system is being filled up from a dry state.

What engine do you have? If you have any pics of it before it was installed, look at them to determine where all the lines go.

I would also check the TPS. "Supposedly had a new one properly set by mechanic" would be something worth checking for yourself:

And make sure the idle speed is set ino the 800-900 RPM range. Not sure if you are having problems at idle or at low throttle openings.

Thanks guys....

.....I'll try burping the radiator some more and as far as the TPS goes....... yes it was at idle that it would jump up and down but now that I set the idle between 800-900 it is real jerky right off idle, super abrupt on and off power????
