How to adjust idle on a 3.0 V6?
The 3.0 V6 in my '92 4Runner idles at 1,250 and this is after it comes up to temperature. How do you adjust the idle on this motor? I thought the high idle was associated with a worn out EGR modulator but I replaced the modulator and it still idles too high. The check engine light had been on for a while and the codes said the EGR modulator was bad. Now the check engine light is off but I still need to adjust the idle.

Fully warm up the engine to operating tempature.
Jumper the connections TE - E1. (TE = Test Engine, E1 = Earth/ground)
Set the ignition timing to specification. (10 degrees BTDC (Before top dead center)).
Adjust the Idle to spec, with a/c off.
Turn on A/C, adjust the A/C Idle up (located on the passenger fender well, black hex knob with a slot in it.) to 100 RPM more then the base idle.
Note: It would be a good idea to have a clean throttle body. Sometimes the screw is adjusted way out due to the restriction at the throttle plate.

Good job Jay,
Also look for a vaccum leak.This too will create a high idle.
Also, rare but it happens. Check the amount of free play in the throttle cable at the throttle body. some time the cable gets broken due to miss handling and pull out of the plastic sleeve.

Jay, my timing has been adjusted a couple times(always by a Toyota mechanic): First after I had the headers installed and then again after the 2.25" exhaust/Flowmaster muffler was put on. Do I have to set the timing back to factory spec before adjusting the idle, or can I just turn the idle screw and be done with it? Also, I have 175K on this motor and the throttle body has never been cleaned. Can I clean it myself or is that the deal where Toyota uses some type of high pressure magic cleaning gismo to clean out the whole induction system?

If you have had your timing adjusted recently, im sure it is fine.
To clean the throttle body, you have to partially remove it and clean it with a brush and cleaner. I would only be concerned about this if the idle adjusting screw appears to be at its limit.
