Fried H Gasket 22re (Long post)
I've had overheating problems lately which are related to a rough radiator and I blew my headgasket
yesterday in an overheat.
Today I did a compression check and I'm getting,
#1 - 155
#2 - 150
#3 - 137 only 141 w/ a tablespoon of oil
#4 - 142
2 months ago when I bought it I was getting
#1 - 160
#2 - 155
#3 - 150
#4 - 155
So my first question is;
Is the rear of the motor the most likely place for a headgasket to go?
2nd question is;
I only compression tested #3 with oil in it. Since the readings weren't much better I can probably assume
that the low reading is due to either the headgasket and/or valve seals right?
Next, I checked my oil level and noticed it was halfway between low and full but looked clean. My radiator was also almost
empty. I removed my skid plate and saw some oil spillage coming from no higher than my oil pan/crank seal
area. Since I replaced my timing chain, steelguides, tensioner etc.. two weeks ago w/o removing the head
I immediately thought it may be the crank seal. When I installed the seal I made sure it was pressed in
level with the oil pump back.
So after that I went to take a look at the coolant...or should I say oil! I drained out about six ounces
and I'd say that 5 ounces of it was oil.
3rd question is;
Would an oil leak as indicated by the underside of the engine be related to the overheating or might it
be coming out of some other place that I've overlooked?
The vehicle is a 1986 Toyota 4Runner (22re) with 270,000 kms on it (165k miles).
I have checked the fluids twice since I've done the timing chain job and they all checked out fine. I
also boiled my T-stat last night and it opened at around 200 deg. fahrenheit so it's ok.
My plans are now to just rebuild the whole head and maybe put a cam in there but how do I get the oil out
of the coolant passages?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Warren,
that sucks about your blown headgasket. It seems to me that just by your pressure readings, you might have had it blown near the #3 and #4 cylinder since the pressure readings are a lot lower than before.
Not sure but, to get the oil out of the coolant passages, couldn't you just drain all the coolant by opening the drainage on the side of the engine as well as the draincock at the bottom of the radiator? Stick a water hose in the radiator turn it on and flush everything out.
Sorry I can't help out much more.
