broken shifter question????
#1
Hello, I own a 94 pickup with a v6 and a 5spd. I admit that I drive a little too agressively( lots of dirt roads ). I do however justife it by takeing care of problems and doing preventive maintance. So heres the problem. My shifter moves freely in all directions. It is stuck in second gear. No problem. I figure I just broke the bushing under the shifter retainer or the rivet through the shifter. I pulled the shifter off and both of the before mentioned are o.k. I'm about to drop the tranny to get a look in there but I have this feeling that I'm missing something that is more simpley the cause. Anyone have any ideas? Every thing is visually fine under neath the shifter mount the restrictors and all that. Thanks in advance...Malickai

I dont know if this is your problem or not, but many many years ago on a 70 or 75 datsun pickup, I was shifting it fast and grabbed 2nd real hard. Well it went into 2nd but the shift lever felt felt strange right after. When I went for 3rd, it stayed in 2nd and the shift lever just kind of moved freely, but also I felt like it was rubbing on something too. Had to drive home in 2nd and try to explane to my dad that "it just did this by itself". Pulled the tranny out, broke it open and found that there is a little pin that holds the 1-2 shift fork to a rod in the gears area. It was sheared off. Had to replace it. The pin cost less than 50 cents, but since I was wrenchin on it with my dad, I had lots of MY free time invested into it. Taught me a lesson, but alas, I still have a tendency to grab 2nd and 4th pretty hard. Lots of luck.
After reading your post again, and seeing that you too are stuck in 2nd, Ill bet that you did just what I did. I have never pulled one of these apart, but my datsun from many years ago was really not that bad. It was a 2 wheel drive so yours may be harder. Have fun.

Your right Williemon, I broke the shear pin on the 1-2 fork. Pain in the butt to get here for such a small pin. Thanks again

Glad you found the problem. It kinda cracks my noodle though cause now Im always gonna be fearing that Im shifting too hard and might shear that pin. Since you did it, I know it can be done. Oh well, I guess I will have to learn to be easier on it.
