air plenum gasket/questions

I appear to have sprung a coolant leak in the damned coolant hose that sits under the air plenum back by the firewall, so I guess I'll have to go pulling parts to change the damn thing.

I was reviewing the procedure in the Haynes manual (all I have for the ol' girl right now) and it looks like a go, but the gasket thing bothers me. Can I just use that 'gasket in a tube' crap or should I find a source for the real McCoy gaskets? I think I'm ready to get going except for having these and I want to get this baby back on the road (and trail) before I run out of summer again.

What do y'all think? Thanks.

Hey! Are you talking about the lower intake manifold gaskets? I would just use some from Toyota. They aren't too expensive. The upper intake gasket is like $8.00 I think.

Have fun.

I did a write up on replacing the valve cover gasket, including the gasket between the plenum and upper intake.

Check it out here:

thanks

Thanks for the suggestions. It's the upper gasket; I just wanted to do it fast and didn't want to have to hunt for a gasket. All I have to do (hopefully) is pull off the plenum to give me room to mess with that coolant hose.

I'll wait and do it the right way.

Very cool. Pretty much all of what I need to do but the valve cover gaskets were done recently (about 2 yrs. ago just prior to my purchase of the 4Runner.) I'm just going back in to get that hose fixed, but you give lots of sage advice.

I'll tilt one to you when I'm done.
