1st gen oil leak - fix or not?
Well here's the problem.
Got a chance to crawl under the 1st gen to see how hard it will be to replace one of my CVs when I noticed I'm leaking motor oil from the bell housing. I've been keeping an eye on that because of a fast-fix that we had to put in at the time. When we were swapping out the clutch, Napa didn't have the gasket for the rear main seal to the lip of the oil pan so the guy helping me out just gobbed on some silicone sealant.
That was probably about 2K miles ago. I'm looking now and seeing that the sealant probably isn't holding up too well.
I know I should get this fixed but I also know how labor intensive it is to just get to the damn thing. I'm also not exactly rolling in the $ right now with some major life changes going on.
Do you guys think I'll be okay with periodic quarts in for the next 1K-3K miles or is this something urgent enough to get fixed immediately before any long distance driving?

I think as long as you keep pouring the oil in it as it leaks out you can "nurse" it for a long time. When you do fix it, I heard that if you use RTV on a 4Runner that you should only use "Ultra Grey"...that for whatever reason it works better than "Ultra Black" on foreign cars.

as long as you don't get oil in the clutch, dumping more oil in isn't going to hurt anything(but maybe the environment).
my old engine went through about a quart every 1k, front main seal.

Yeah, I've been keeping an eye on the clutch. This isn't the first time I've had oil leak in there :pat:
I'll probably get to it eventually. Looks like I'll have to stock up in the meantime. Thanks guys.
