Need engine advice! 22RE/22R

Hey folks,

I have a dilemma..

I have a 1989 Toyota 22RE pick up with a blown head gasket and warped head...

It just so happens that I have a 1984 22R with low kilometers at my disposal....

So what I am trying to decide is what I can do with this:

Convert the 84 22R to 22RE... Is this eve possible? Potentially not unless I replace the head?

Or drop the 22R directly in the 89 body and swap the wiring harnesses.....

I have done lots of searching but cannot really find a straight answer.

Thanks for any information.

Cheers

I think it'd be a mistake to go backward from EFI to carb. Might be possible to convert your early 22r engine with a later type head. I don't know.....
Have you actually determined what head is on your early engine. Might be that your engine is late enough production to have the later head and block.

Maybe this will help>>>>>> Engine - 22R Block/Head Identification - LC Engineering

Thanks for that link...

I have an exhaust system for the 84 so as long as the intake port is the same in theory I can bolt my EFI intake onto my 84 head?

I don't think the pattern will permit it. Maybe someone else will chime in.

I think you'll want to use that link to verify the 84 is not a 85 and later "laser" block. Easy to swap 85 and later carb to efi, but 84 to 85 is different block, different head with little interchangeability. That's my understanding, but I'm not 100% sure.
