Lots of questions, need some advice
Alright I got a lot on my mind so hang on.
For starters I have a 1986 solid axled 4runner with 4.88 gears and 33inch tires(dual cases, locker blah blah)
the 22re is about to fail smog (barely passed last time and is now puffing smoke and burning oil)
So im looking at 3 different choices. rebuild 22re, 2.7 swap, 3.4 swap.
also on my mind is that im planning on going to 35's
Choice #1 rebuild 22re
advantages- way easy, reliable, I know what I have and what im getting
disadvantages- no power gain, would have to re-gear when going to 35's (extra $400 or more)
Choice #2 2.7
if I did this I would either find a whole wrecked donor vehicle or just the engine, Id have to get an oil pan, sump, and probably new radiator
advantages-easiest power upgrade, bolts directly to my tranny
disadvantages-all that work and not too much more power, ugly crossover pipe down below
questions- how much harder is electrical compared to 3.4? How hard is it to upgrade (cam, headers, maybe new head?) can I run 35's with 4.88 gears? (save $400) estimated total cost if I do it myself? Can I put on an aircompressor and still keep the a/c?
Choice #3 3.4
Im leaning twords this one
If I did i would definatly get a wrecked donor vehicle. I kinda like the idea of the tacoma tranny, (high 5th gear) and I would definatly not have to re-gear. Im a welder so the crossover pipe I can make myself. with the money saved on not re-gearing I could by an ors wiring harness to make my life easier. I know I have to go to a junkyard and get new oil pan, sump, radiator, dipstick blah blah
advantages-lots of power, no re-gearing. better tranny with higher 5th gear,,,,and,,,,,POWER
disadvantage-most exspensive, most work, have to buy adapter to transfer cases (not too bad)
questions-would I have to move my transfer cases? thats another $200 for drivelines if I do, how much more exspensive than 2.7 if I do all work?
more questions- I live in California so how hard is it to get the 2.7 or 3.4 smogged?
Thank you to anyone who reads all this and responds. I like to get all the info before I jump into something

Lots of ?????
HOWDY, NOR. IN MY OPINION, I WILL DEFINATELY STAY AWAY FROM CHOICE #2, POWER DIFERENCE IS NOT WORTH THE EFFORT, NOW..ON THE 3.4 SWAP, I KNOW 99.9% OF THE GUYS ON THIS FORUM, GO FOR IT BUT WE IN CA HAVE THE EMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS. THAT CAN BE A NIGHTMARE AFTER ALL YOUR WORK AND $$$$$$$ INVESTED ON THE SWAP. NOW, I THINK THERE'S A GOOD REBUILD KIT FOR THE 22R THAT GIVES THAT LITTLE PUPPY, BIG COJONES, AND IF YOU STILL WANT TO RE-GEAR THAT'S THE BEST INVESTED MONEY.
