The easier of the diesel engines to get would be the 2.4 liter turbo diesel. Downsides include cracking heads and mild fuel economy (roughly 27-29 miles per gallon). Now, that might sound pretty good compared to what a 3.0 gets, but with diesel running at the price it is now, you're probably going to negate any benefit of converting to diesel unless you're making your own biodiesel. My 3.4 gets 22 mpg highway (if I drive conservatively), turning 33" tires. You'd be a bit annoyed at the lack of power, too, unless you cruise mostly flat land.

The 3.0 would be your better bet for power, but you lose economy. And they'd be a lot tougher to find, I'd imagine.

I've got the 3.0L TD in my 92 pickup. I got it from Jarco Inc. Its a company in GA that imports the motors and trannys and wiring and everything you need to make it work pretty much. I got mine last August and have been driving it since late October. I'm not getting the greatest mileage as of right now as I still don't have a nice clean air filter. But I've got a K&N on order and it should be in within the week. The filter right now is very dirty but on the highway I get about 25-26mpg right now. The best mileage I got was when I first got it going in the fall before the winter fuel and the air filter was still fairly clean and it was 30mpg. Once I get the new air filter, 3.90s gears, possibly and intercooler and the last chunk of 3 inch straight pipe in I should be 30-33mpg or so. But one thing I must say is the 3.0 ever a nice motor. Not only to work on but to drive. It pulls to no end. I can honestly say it will absolutely roast the tires. If you've got more questions just ask and I'll answer as best I can.
