I say keep the 22r and freshen it up , save the time and headaches doing the swap and use your money to find a used supercharger setup .

you can actually build one hell of a 22r for cheap. i put about 1200 into mine including rebuilding it. it was nice. but i decided two mor cylinders and efi was better.

consider the 5m/7m motors from older supras. they are plentiful, cheap, and powerful as all get out. especially at highway speeds. not too mention easy to put in (bolt in, anyone?) if you have 5m motor mounts and a w58 bellhousing it will bolt into your truck, as long it was a W or G series tranny to begin with and your still using it. the only thing you have to quibble about is the oil pan. clearance it, or use a front sump and take out the steering stabilizer. or go full out, like me and make a custom pan and pickup.

they are great engines, its a good consideration. but for a bolt in badass setup, 22r/re/rte. im looking for an extra 22re block/head/manifolds to fab up a supercharger system using an eaton m62 from gm v6's.

I recently picked up a 1979 3/4 ton longbed pickup. It runs and drives well, and it has a 20r with l43 4 spd manual transmission with only around 40k miles on it. I want to engine swap and maybe get a little more power and mate it with a 5 spd manual. I’ve thought about a 22r with the l52 transmission but I’m not sure about it. What do y’all suggest?

you will never go wrong with rebuilding a 22re but unless youre willing to empty out your pockets and put some kind of boost on it its never going to throw you back in your seat. the 3rz is an amazing engine its a 2.7l 4 cyl thats insanely strong and has a ton of after market performance parts and has endless potential. also a new thing that is popping up more and more is swapping in a 3sge beams out of the altezzas. 3sge is about 200 bhp and a really nice and high reving engine with i believe already comes with forged internals. i have a friend of mine working on swapping a 3s into a 97 and so far its looking to be a pretty straight forward swap its actually going in next weekend i can keep you up to date on it. in my opinion going with the 4.3 vortec in the yota wouldnt be as rewarding as going with the 3rz or the 3sge beams engine

The reason I thought about the 22r is because it would be a direct bolt in and it wouldn’t require any driveline modifications. I don’t plan on doing anything crazy with it, I mainly just want the 5spd transmission and just a little more power for some daily driving. I’ll look into the 3rz because that does sound like a good choice. I also read about a 20r/22r hybrid that sounds interesting.
