91 3.0 swap into my 95... Please help
Hi guys,
Newbie here and was hoping for some help. I recently bought a 91 runner with a remanufactured engine that I want to put in my 95 pickup with a blown motor. Both are 3.0 with manual transmission. I have read there are slight differences in those engine and was hoping somebody could outline them for me. I tried searching but couldn't find specifics on what I need to do. If anybody has a helpful link on a swap like that on can list the things I need to do and swap or keep from each vehicle it will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks again and I can't wait to get my pickup back on the road.
Thanks
Dom

Ok, so got the engine swapped but when we started it black smoke was coming out of the exhaust really bad. It ran fine before the swap in the 4runner but now we can't figure out what went wrong. Any suggestions.

did you use the 91 ECU or the 95 ECU?
One thing I've learned is that just because the connectors fit together, doesn't guarantee that the pins have the same function...I've found discrepancies in the wiring from 1990 to 1995

We used the ECU from the 95. So we got the black smoke problem taken care of. It was the AFM. We took off the 95 air box and used the one off the 91 and it started right up.
New problem is a cold start issue. After the vehicle sits over night it is hard to start in the morning. Takes about 5-6 key turns at 5-6 seconds each for it to start and when it does its barley on and sputtering for about 5-10 seconds then idles just fine. Once it warms up I can turn it off and on no problem. Its just the initial cold start where its struggling. Gas tank and fuel pump were pretty rusted from sitting for 5 years. Had to replace the fuel pump. I'm thinking the fuel filter could be causing the cold start issue now or possibly the Cold start injector or CSI timer switch or maybe coolant temp sensor. I do have a check engine light that i need to check and will post my findings. Could be a wiring issue like you stated. Other than that it runs like a champ, plenty of power and good throttle response and no hesitation.
