It was suggested that I move my question to this forum, so here goes.I have a 1985 4X4 22re 5 speed, I just bought a 1986 2 wheel drive turbo with an automatic trans. I am thinking of putting the turbo engine in the 4X4 for a little extra power, does anyone know of any problems I may run into with this swap.

i have done the swap the other way 86 ret to 88 re. the throttle assembly is different,the standard trans has a dash pot on it the auto doesn't, just swap them. i am not sure about computer and fuel pump. the turbo computer and pump works on the non turbo but you might check the part numbers. or swap them to be safe. you might want to pull the turbo and inspect the inside for cracks.they well known for this and it can be costly to fix.if it is cracked i would price parts before i started. years ago a reman. turbo was 1200.oo exchange.they may have come down in price but i haven,t checked. also while it is off clean the oil line to the turbo. i was told this is also a weak point ,they can partly plug up if the oil wasn't changed regular and starve the bearings for oil. i had to learn the hard way about the turbo motors ,i hope you have better luck than i did.

Thanks for the info. This bright idea I had may be too big an undertaking. My engine is in very good condition, I just could use a little more power when pulling a trailer. There may be a better way to do that without losing gas milage.
