Solid Axle compatibility...Need some help!!!
LONG time YT user who's lost his account info and I'm now coming back to ask the Axle Guru's a question... Yes, I've searched.
SO I'm building myself a 1KZ-TE powered 2nd Gen (1995) 4Runner and we decided to do an SAS on it while we're at it... Problem is Solid axles seem to be rare as hens teeth these days and it's kind of "luck of the draw" whether you find one (esp. if you don;t want to drive hours away to grab it or have it shipped across the country)...
ANYWAY...
I found a good clean SFA out of an 81 Pickup... My QUESTION is:
-Can I use this 81 axle if I'm wanting to swap over the 95 IFS hubs/parts/brakes to get my track width back (not against wheel spacers, I just want the better brakes etc)???
OR...
- Should I really be looking "only" for an 84-85 SFA if I'm wanting to swap those parts over???
I don't care about the gusseting cause I'm already going to add gusseting to it anyway, I just need to know if there are hidden "issues" with doing the IFS hub/brake swap onto an 81 SFA or if it's "new" enough to let the parts swap over.
My other thought was to run an FJ80 front axle, BUT at 4" wider track-width, that means I'd have to run 2" spacers OUT BACK to get my track width the same and I'm not sure (and don't want to find out the hard way) if that will mean the tires are coming into contact with the body under full stuff...
This project has taken me a year+ to get to this point and I'm absolutely DYING to start making some real head-way on it so any advice/answers would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Dave

79-85 SFA are the same width. The difference over the years is in the factory gusset for added strength. Add the IFS hubs for added width. But you'll need to retain the SFA locking dial for the 30spline axles.
Do yourself a favor and get the front range off-road tacoma brake adapter to run larger calipers and rotors.
Let's see the build thread for the KZ.

Hey thanks for the fast reply mate...
SO, you're saying that YES, the 81 SFA will accept the 95's hub assemblies and brakes, or does that FROR kit require me to then go to Tacoma brakes (EDIT: actually that's not gonna work cause I want to re-use my 95 IFS brakes etc, not have to go buy yet another set of brakes although they may be laying around the shop so maybe I WILL do that... we shall see)??? I'm familiar with the difference in trussing, but The shop that I'm working with on this build seems to think that the 81 axle (and "pre 83-84-85" axles) won't work with the IFS hubs I'm wanting to swap over. SO what you're saying is this is incorrect and that I'll be able to get the IFS stuff to swap over except for using the Locking Dial??? We have the ability to fab up a bracket like FROR's for the 95's IFS brakes so maybe I'll just look into that. Just need to be clear that I can in fact use the 81 Axle to do all this and that it's not the kind of situation where I need to find myself a "seemingly rare" 84-85 Axle...
I'll post the build thread links once I get back home to my comp.
Cheers

You need the solid axle lock outs, because they are 30 spline, and IFS hubs are 27.
Heres how I made my 92 breaks work with a solid axle > https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...l#post52180936

Thanks Rattle Wagon, that's some good info to keep handy when it comes time to do that aye... Cheers.
After living in Australia for years and having seen that the "Toyota Grass" is INDEED greener on the other side, I came home and bought a 1st Gen 4Runner. It's been a great truck, but the wife and I sleep in the back so the 2dr config. was harder to live with for long periods of time and frankly, once you've experienced Toyota Diesel Goodness, it's hard (for me anyway) to ever be happy with a petrol vehicle unless it's a Rally car or a Sand Rail aye...
here's a couple of the Build Threads...

Pretty BORING up to now. My engine was a KZN185 Vintage/era (read: newer) 2wd version so just getting the right P#'s for the 4wd oil-pan/strainer needed to fit it into a KZN130 Chassis was a MASSIVE endeavor and has so far set us back over 6 months after ordering the wrong pan the first time, then came the fear that I didn't have the right ECU/Wiring harness to make it all work (I do thankfully), but hoping with axle in hand that'll change QUICKLY. Now that I'm back on YT, I'll have to post up a more "concise" build thread for this board as well.
Cheers and No Worries

With a little bit of searching, I think it's only the 79-80 hubs that won't work with the fj60 rotors, but with changing out to the ifs hubs that's a moot point.
You can't use the ifs rotors, just the hubs and calipers. Rotors need to be either redrilled fj60 rotors or Taco rotors that slip over the hub(after some grinding on the edge of the wms on the hub, that is). Then the caliper needs to be mounted on the outside of the ears on the knuckles
This is assuming you're not getting the SkyOffroad widening kit which uses unmodified fj60 rotors and allows the calipers to be mounted on the correct side of the mounting ears.
