Prescott, AZ run to Maverick Ridge, 19th of July
Trail Rating: 3.5
When: 19 JULY 03 at 09:30 AM
Where: At cooler, higher elevations South of Prescott, Az. via Riggles Hill, Maverick Ridge, Halford Hill, and Mount Trittle.
Est. Length: approx 4 hours
CB Channel: 4
OK- You wanted a cooler place to wheel! I rate this as a 3.5 trail due to loose, steep and off camber sections.
The trail starts south of Prescott near Ponderosa Park, traverses thru Pines, Pinions, and Chaparral. It features several challenging and difficult hill climbs that require at least 32" tires and a rear hard locker (two would be better) for a Jeep, or Toy, full sizes locked front and rear. If you’re only locked on the rear, tire spin is necessary to get to the top of the last hill climb.
Riggle’s Hill (named after Bob Riggle of Hemi Under Glass fame, the first guy to go up it on a dirk bike many years ago) is a tough off camber hill climb that leads to a short, fun, rocky hill climb section past the Blue Dick Mine. Once past the rocky section, we travel on the very top of Maverick Ridge until we reach Halford Hill. The views from the top of the ridge are awesome with vistas to the south and north. Halford Hill is the most difficult obstacle on the trail. It is a long, steep, loose rock hill climb with a challenging ledge at the very top. I usually use crawler low range in second gear to prevent wheel spin- an auto-tranny is a big advantage on this one.
NOTE:
If you’re overly fond of your paint, this is not a trail you’ll want to take. AZ pin stripping is severe- the brush gets very tight on the upper sections of the trail.
Bring a lunch and plenty of beverages- while we’re gonna be on top of the mountain, it’s mostly a southern exposure until we reach Maverick Ridge. We’ll stop for lunch in the Pines.
Fire Restrictions are in place, and as far as I’m concerned, I’d prefer if you don’t smoke at all, even in your vehicle. The area is tinder dry-
Let’s meet at the Safeway on south Highway 89 at 09:30 AM. It is south of the County Courthouse (the Plaza downtown area) approx 1.5 miles. The address is:
Safeway
450 White Spar Rd.
Prescott, Az. 86303
From Phx:
----
Take I-17 to Cordes Jnt. and Highway 69.
----
Stay on Highway 69 to Prescott, it turns into Gurley St.
----
Turn left on Montezuma St. (in front of the Palace Bar on old Whiskey Row, Highway 89 South); it’s on the west side of the Plaza. Stay on it up the hill and around the corner to the right.
----
There is a traffic light at Copper Basin Rd, the Safeway is on the right just before the light. I’ll be in my beat, gray exo-cage'd Toy trail rig.

cool!
come on up!
--------------
Sliders are not required, but could come in handy at the top of Halford hill-
Halford Hill is a local name for the hill- Ronny was a dirt bike rider who forgot it was there when coming down from Mount Trittle. Legend has it he was going way to fast to stop and bailed off his bike at the top, and didn't land till he was almost at the bottom- a LONG way down!
